Assists engineering with the addition or modification of equipment or systems, Promotes compliance with governmental regulations, Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs), and the Maintenance Food Safety Program. Prepares and submits the weekly reports to keep management informed of spending, labor and overtime, status of projects, and issues, for example. Conducts departmental meetings with employees. Communicates effectively with all levels of employees -B.A. or B.S. degree in electrical or mechanical engineering preferred -5+ years experience in maintenance with 3+ years supervisory experience, preferably in a high speed production environment (food processing with an understanding of food plant sanitation and good manufacturing practices is preferred) -Familiarity with local, state, and federal agencies as related to the food industry -Comprehensive knowledge of electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems. -Familiarity with continuous improvement processes (Six Sigma and Lean Manufacturing) -Solid organizational, planning, troubleshooting, analytical, motivational, and computer skills. Tour of Duty: Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. This position is located at the VA Medical Center, Des Moines, IA. In this position you will serve as the supervisor of the Structures and Grounds/Transportation Unit in Engineering Service which includes Carpentry, Paint, Locksmith, Grounds and Transportation trades. You will be responsible for planning the normal daily, weekly and monthly maintenance and repair and preventative maintenance work schedules. You will be responsible for providing estimates for manpower and materials needed to accomplish station level projects and for ordering materials and scheduling manpower to complete approved projects during the fiscal year. You will provide input to Engineering management for the Structures & Grounds/Transportation Unit activities concerning long range planning such as repair of parking lots, sidewalks, grounds repairs and landscaping. Short range planning includes budgetary input, tree replanting, and minor repairs and landscaping. Insures availability of adequate government motor vehicle transportation for patients and employees as well as insuring vehicles are in good repair and safe to operate. You will develop accurate position descriptions and position performance requirements for all employees in the unit. You will be responsible for maintaining compliance with all appropriate rules and regulations ensuring all work and materials meet appropriate regulations and codes (NFPA, ADA, etc.). You will schedule and approve leave for subordinates in the unit, monitor leave for abuse, taking corrective action when needed. You will be responsible for maintaining a continuous training program for subordinates on such issues as VA rules and regulations, suggestions, cost reduction and proper use and operation of tools, materials and equipment. You will maintain appropriate inventory of equipment, material, and repair parts necessary to economically and effectively function as a maintenance unit assuring proper materials are ordered and delivered to worksites.
