These positions are in the Facility Management Division of Glacier National Park.  Incumbents will perform building and/or utility maintenance operation duties throughout the park. These positions require journey level experience in carpentry and substantial experience in painting, plumbing, electrical, and masonry/concrete to perform construction or rehabilitation work on residential and light commercial projects. Carpentry work includes constructing, altering, modifying or repairing park housing, storage areas, workrooms, and offices to include framework, rafters, roofing, joists, insulation, sheet rock, paneling, doors, windows, stairs, siding and flooring (various coverings). Constructs and installs cabinets and countertops. Installs interior/exterior trim. Builds small structures and replaces deteriorated sections of existing structures. Matches or reproduces exactly various components of historic buildings and fixtures. Painting work includes painting and refinishing a variety of interior and exterior surfaces; staining and varnishing (to include marbling, graining, speckling, tinting, toning of paint, and matching existing colors).  Plumbing work includes installing, modifying, repairing new and existing utilities, supply and disposal systems, equipment such as sewage, water, oil, and gas distribution systems; and bathrooms and fire sprinkler systems. Plans and lays out the routing, placement, slant, slope-of-fall and ensures proper operation of systems and equipment. Electrical work includes installing and repairing electrical systems by removing, replacing, tightening, splicing, soldering, and insulating defective wiring  controls, equipment, and fixtures such as broken and bare wiring, burned out switches and relays, loose connections and fittings, damaged light fixtures, etc. Masonry work includes maintaining, constructing, repairing, restoring, stabilizing and altering a variety of structures and surfaces of brick, block, stone adobe, and other related materials involving historic structures, decorative walls, foundations, fireplaces, bridges, retaining walls, kiva walls, walkways, manholes, etc. Plans materials, tools, techniques and evaluates conditions for all projects. Uses a wide variety of tools, measuring devices and equipment for all fields listed. Works from complex building plans, blueprints, sketches, building codes, etc.   Physical Demands:  Lifts and handles objects weighing up to 50 pounds unassisted; heavier objects with assistance.  Frequently is required to stand while working and may climb ladders or scaffolding, and bend, stoop, climb, and work in awkward positions.  Meets physical requirements to use personal protective equipment (PPE) such as respirators when required.  A physical examination is required prior to appointment.  Some positions require individuals to hike and work at remote sites.      Area Information: West Glacier: Grade school through grade 6 in West Glacier within walking distance. Junior high and high students are bused to Columbia Falls (19 miles). All services are available in Kalispell (32 miles) or Whitefish  (28 miles).   St. Mary: St. Mary, Montana has seasonal food and gas services. Most amenities are available in Browning (35 miles). Medical facilities are available in Browning, Cardston, Alberta, Canada (31 miles). Elementary school through 6th grade is located in Babb (8 miles). Junior high and high school students may attend school in Browning or Cardston, Canada.   Government housing may be available. Deductions for Government housing will be made from employee’s paycheck. Maintenance Worker shall be employed as an hourly position under the direct supervision of the O&M Foreman and performs day-to-day maintenance activities on irrigation facilities and equipment. Activities include canal cleaning, removing obstructions to the flow of water, repairing or replacing facilities such as turnouts, culverts, and water control structures, and repair of electrical and mechanical equipment associated with Project pumping plants. Position involves forming, placing, and finishing concrete, carpentry, routine welding and other duties as assigned. Applicant must have a high school diploma or GED. Applicant must have at least three years experience in a construction or industrial maintenance position. A certificate or degree in a construction technology field from a vocational or technical school may substitute for one year of experience. Incumbent assists in the upkeep of over 90 park buildings and structures by the use of skilled labor in all construction divisions (carpentry, plumbing, electrical work, painting, masonry and general maintenance) with an emphasis on preservation maintenance.  Operates Park vehicles in the commission of duties. Assists others within the Park on occasion (ranching duties, special events and custodial work). Sometimes works in adverse weather conditions and with heavy materials and tools.  Will coordinate the work of a YCC crew of up to 6 members during the summer.  Will assist resource division in the spring during calving season.   PHYSICAL DEMANDS:  The Physical effort required is considered heavy to moderate, and requires occasional lifting or handling of objects or materials up to 50 pounds unassisted and occasionally lifting or moving heavier items with the assistance of a lifting device or other workers. Frequently required to stand while working, climb ladders or scaffolding, and bend, stoop, climb, and work in awkward positions performing the work in all manners of environmental conditions. WORK ENVIRONMENT: General work is performed at historic sites throughout the park which may require scaffold and ladder systems. The structures may be extremely deteriorated and structurally unsound and are therefore considered hazardous. The work is often extremely dusty and dirty and of such nature that protective equipment and clothing such as hard hat, safety shoes, goggles, respirators, and ear protectors are required whether working indoors or out. Work outside is in all types of weather or in greasy, noisy, dirty, drafty, or otherwise unpleasant conditions. Much of the work performed outdoors is in historic structures with temperatures ranging from a low of -40 degrees to high of 100 degrees. Other environmental factors such as stinging and biting insects, and chemical dust and sprays may be encountered. Incumbent is also exposed to the danger of serious accidents while operating motor vehicles. Assignments could involve working with hazardous materials, such as rodent nests and lead based.  AREA INFORMATION/HOUSING INFORMATION: Grant-Kohrs Ranch National Historic Site is located ¼ mile north of Deer Lodge, Montana.  Complete services are available in Deer Lodge, including schools, grades K-12; dental and medical facilities; and a hospital.  Colleges are located in Butte (37 miles), Helena (57 miles), and Missoula (82 miles).  The climate is very dry with moderate summers (rarely exceeding 90 degrees) and cold winters.  No government housing is available; however, a variety of rentals and property for sale is available in Deer Lodge.
