Under the direct supervision of the Power Plant Mechanic and general oversight from the Assistant Chief Engineer, this position supports the daily operation and maintenance of power plant systems, ensuring safe, reliable, and efficient facility performance.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB
- Assist Plant Mechanic and maintenance staff with repairs and general maintenance projects.
- Participates in the plants preventive maintenance and turnaround programs.
- Assists with troubleshooting and diagnosing mechanical issues.
- Works with contractors and vendors during equipment upgrades or installations.
- Support the installation, cutting, threading, and fitting of steam and water piping systems.
- Help maintain and repair plant equipment including boilers, pumps, cooling towers, turbines and generators.
- Perform cleaning and upkeep of plant equipment and facilities.
- Operate boilers as assigned or required.
- Maintains compliance with OSHA, state, and local safety regulations; always follows established safety protocols.
- Performs preventive maintenance according to schedules and standard procedures to reduce equipment downtime.
- Attend all required and assigned training and maintain required licenses and certifications in compliance with state and federal regulations and Public Utilities Commission standards.
- Available for overtime or on-call work during outages, peak periods, or emergencies.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs)
- Ability to safely bend, kneel climb, and work in confined spaces.
- Proficiency in reading, interpreting, and following oral and written instructions.
- Basic mechanical aptitude with the ability to assist in maintenance and repair of equipment.
- Strong teamwork and communication skills.
- Willingness to learn and adapt in a dynamic environment.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid drivers license.
- Minimum of two years experience in mechanical maintenance and repair OR completion of a directly related vocational program.
- State of Minnesota Special Engineers License is required after six months of employment.
- Preferred: Experience in power plant operations or boiler maintenance.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
- Must be available to work rotating shifts during electrical peaking periods or as assigned.
- Must obtain a State of Minnesota Second Class Grade B Engineers License within 18 months of hire.
- Will be required to acquire at that time, a State of Minnesota First Class Provisional Engineers License and must obtain a First Class Grade B Engineers License as soon as eligible.
