Public Works Maintenance Worker 1

The City of Madison Water Utility is hiring a Public Works Maintenance Worker 1
The successful candidate will use basic manual skills, including use of basic hand and power tools; more advanced skills, including use of air hammer, concrete saw, star drill, tamper, and other tools; and heavy manual labor in adverse weather over long periods of time. Work is performed under the supervision of a field supervisor and general direction of a Leadworker or Public Works Maintenance Worker 3, who issue orders for routine jobs and give specific instructions when departures are made from established procedures.

New hires may be assigned to the full range of Water Utility duties in water main and service distribution activities, including assignment to crews or individual work, operating valves and hydrants in water main flushing operations and other system maintenance, truck and equipment operation; water main, service, hydrant, valve or curb box maintenance, replacement or repair; street and terrace restoration, lawn and landscape maintenance, emergency repair work and night flushing schedule (scheduled hours of work outside regular day shift).
Employees must respond to calls back to duty approximately 50% of the time the Utility initiates a call.
Hours/Week: 40 Monday - Friday 7:00 A.M. - 3:00 P.M. + Call back overtime.

Prepare work sites for Distribution Section repair or maintenance projects:

• Set up digging area, using field maps (laptop mapping software or field book) and marked utility locations.
• Position trucks, set up traffic control, set out tools and equipment, and prepare surface for digging.
• Prepare trucks. Load necessary materials. Perform routine safety checks of vehicles and equipment.
• Assist with distribution system thawing operations using related tools and equipment.
• Assist in digging excavation, clearing away/lifting out rock and dirt to expose underground utilities.
• Assist in filling ditch and cleanup operations, including returning tools and materials to truck and storage areas.

Work as assigned on Distribution Section projects:

• Perform water main flushing operations and valve turning operations.
• Locate, mark repairs, and mark water service lines, valve boxes, curb boxes, and hydrant leads.
• Check and repair blacktop and ditches.
• Wash and maintain trucks, tools and equipment.
• Plow and remove snow or other material.
• Mow and trim at Water Utility facilities.
• Respond to customer questions or problems, investigate, and report results.
• Return to Water Utility to respond to emergency situations as required.
• Maintain required records.
• Direct work of assigned hourly employees.

Possession of a valid Wisconsin driver's license.

Possession of a Class A Commercial Driver's License within six (6) months of employment. A condition of continued employment is passage of the written portion (Learners Permit portion) of the relevant Department of Transportation testing process within three (3) months of employment and passage of the skills (road test) portion of the test and obtaining the required operators license within six (6) months of employment.

Physical Requirements:
Employees in this position must be able to do strenuous work, including occasionally lifting and operating air hammer (90 lbs.), removing and replacing utility access covers (92 lbs.). Ability to lift 40 lbs. often, such as, valve keys and valve box parts. Often turning valve key against resistance of 10 100 lbs. to open and close valves with and without assistance. Placing hydraulic valve operating equipment, going down and up ladder in excavation, working in mud and water in excavation, hand excavating with shovels, moving material such as concrete and asphalt with shovels. Work in extreme weather over long periods of time while standing, bending, twisting and squatting. Lifting and shifting heaving objects and equipment, sweeping, directing traffic, operating tools and equipment.
