Under general supervision, performs a wide variety of maintenance activities in the construction, repair, and preservation of roads and bridges on the state highway system. Operates motorized equipment used in the construction and maintenance of highways and bridges or the movement of materials and supplies used to perform these maintenance activities. Operates complex motorized equipment on a District Cement Reclamation Specialty Crew. Operates both specialized and heavy equipment such as reclaimer/stabilizer, motor grader, crawler dozer, front-end loader, excavators, and cement spreader in conjunction with highway maintenance rehabilitation and reconstruction operations. Assists Crew Foreman in devising a schedule for work to be performed by maintenance crew. Quantifies daily records of work performed and materials used, records and inputs data into departmental asset management systems such as Highway Maintenance Management System (HMMS) and Enterprise Asset Management System (EAMS). Reviews maintenance requests and complaints forms. Performs skilled manual labor, and operates heavy and specialized equipment used in conjunction with cleaning out drainage ditches, temporary road patching, crack sealing/filling operations, installing sideline and crossline pipes, driveway installations and roadside and right-of-way clearing operations during reclamation off-season periods. May lead a small crew of 2 or 3 people in assigned independent daily tasks. Operates tandem and single axle dump trucks with trailers, and lowboy truck tractor for hauling material and transporting equipment for maintenance and construction operations. Instructs crew members daily in safety practices such as flagging operations, wearing of safety equipment, vehicle safety, or when working with hazardous material and waste. Coordinates placement of traffic control devices to properly set up a maintenance work zone according to SCDOT Work Zone Traffic Control Manual and Field Guide. Conducts safety inspection on all assigned vehicles and equipment. Monitors the preventative maintenance program of equipment to ensure a routine maintenance schedule is followed and to monitor equipment use and wear to prolong equipment life. Operates both portable tank-mounted salt brine anti-icing equipment and standard dump truck with snowplow attachment and sand spreader to remove snow and ice from highways and bridges. Performs other duties as requested or assigned by supervisor including after-hours work, inclement weather operations, and assisting on-call personnel. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Three and one-half (3.5) years of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operators license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.
The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. This position requires walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies. Frequently exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis.
