The vacancy is for one (1) full-time position. This recruitment is for a Maintenance Worker I in the Sewer Division.

THE DEPARTMENT
The City of Imperial Beachs Sewer Division has the primary responsibility for the operation, maintenance and rehabilitation of the Citys eleven (11) pump stations and fifty miles of sewer collection system to ensure that sewage flows continuously and without overflows. This division also provides routine maintenance and cleaning of the Citys above and below-ground storm water conveyance system.

WORK HOURS
9/80 work schedule: Monday thru Friday with alternate Friday closures; 6:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Monday thru Thursday and Friday 6:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. Incumbent may be required to be on "stand-by" subject to emergency call-back after working hours, weekends and holidays.
GENERAL PURPOSE
Under supervision, to perform routine manual skilled and semi-skilled work in the maintenance, construction and repair of City grounds, and related areas, wastewater (sewer), facilities, to operate a variety of maintenance and repair tools and equipment; perform a variety of maintenance tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility; perform other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Works under general direction of the Sewer Supervisor, and/or designee. Perform a wide variety of semi-skilled and skilled manual work in the construction, maintenance, repair and installation of sewer collection systems and related structures and appurtenances; survey and rebuild pump station mechanical and electrical equipment; perform landscape and building maintenance related to facilities; repair, installation, testing, service and maintenance of a variety of wastewater equipment, including electric motors, impeller and centrifugal pumps, positive displacement pumps, appliances, circuit breakers, relays, water lines and globe, gate and rotary valves and television camera equipment; remove and repair various electrical components; fabricate parts; dismantle, repair and replace pump and compressor parts; replace lift station pumping equipment to ensure proper operation; repair clay, galvanized steel, plastic, fiberglass and other types of pipes; operate a vactor and sewer rodder; take and log meter readings; adjust various flow meters; adjust automatic valves; evaluate condition of auxiliary equipment; participate in inspecting, cleaning, maintaining, constructing, and repairing of wastewater collection systems utilizing a variety of mechanical and specialized equipment including, but not limited to, rodders, CCTVs, and related equipment; perform and assist with pump station inspections, maintenance and repair; record instrument readings, and make minor adjustments to ensure proper operation; perform a variety of manual tasks such as lifting and carrying of heavy loads including materials, equipment, and debris, while seeking assistance and utilizing equipment when appropriate; inspect and maintain easements, some of which may be remote or difficult to access; participate in the repair of the wastewater collection system, including damaged pipes, manholes, and casting adjustments, which may include excavation and shoring; complete and maintain accurate, legible, and timely records of work performed; perform basic building and grounds maintenance at collection systems facilities; participate in the containment and clean-up of unsanitary sewer overflows and provide notifications and field documentation to immediate supervisor; stay abreast of new trends and innovations in the field of wastewater collection system operation and maintenance; inspect, trouble-shoots, and maintain proper collection system operation using advanced techniques and instruments including but not limited to closed-circuit TV, smoke testing, and related procedures; provide assistance to agencies and private organizations in locating and identifying utilities and manholes; participate in the development and propagation of SOPs (standard operating procedures) including safe work practices and procedures; attend and participate in group meetings; stay abreast of new trends and innovations in the field. Knowledge of:
Operational characteristics of the City's wastewater collection system; materials, methods, techniques, and terminology used in the construction, maintenance and repair activities related to the maintenance and repair of wastewater collection systems and storm drains infrastructure use; purposes, uses, and operating characteristics of a variety of vehicles, equipment, power tools and hand tools used in public works maintenance and repair including motorized, pneumatic, and hydraulic equipment; traffic laws, ordinances, and rules involved in truck and equipment operation; principles and practices of record keeping; proper methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of pumps and compressors and sewer lines; applicable codes and regulations; safety precautions applicable to electricity and pump maintenance; OSHA requirements for confined/enclosed spaces.

Ability to:
Perform a variety of semi-skilled and skilled maintenance, construction and repair work in the area of work assigned; operate a variety of vehicles and equipment in a safe and effective manner; use and operate vehicles and equipment, hand tools, and power tools and equipment required for the work in a safe and efficient manner; ensure safety around work areas in high traffic; read and interpret basic maps and blueprints; perform a variety of tasks for extended periods of time and in unfavorable weather conditions; perform heavy manual labor; locate and mark sewer mains and services; perform pipe and masonry work; work safely and adhere to principles of safety when working near traffic or in other environments; respond to collection system maintenance/repair emergencies; operate vehicles, equipment, and tools; work independently in the absence of supervision; understand and follow oral and written instructions; communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; establish, maintain effective and harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work and contribute to a cooperative team effort.

Education
High School Diploma, or General Equivalency Diploma (G.E.D.), plus a minimum of two (2) years of experience in construction, electrical, HVAC, building maintenance or closely related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.

Training and Experience
At least two (2) years of experience in construction or a closely related field or any combination of education, training and experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties and responsibilities as described.

Licensing and Certification Requirements
Possession of or ability to obtain, prior to employment, a valid Class "C" California driver's license with a safe, satisfactory driving record and able to maintain it through the course of employment.

Completion of CPR Certification within 12 months of employment and maintain same during employment.

Completion of the Traffic Control & Flagger Training within 12 months of employment.

Obtain within 12 months of employment a valid Class B California driver's license with tanks and air brake endorsements is required. Employee will be afforded the use of a class B vehicle to use for the road exam. Safe, satisfactory driving record and ability to maintain it through the course of employment is required.
Possess and maintain a valid Collections System Maintenance Grade I Certificate issued by the California Water Environment Association (CWEA) is required. If not possessed at the time of hire, must obtain within 18 months of employment, and maintain same during employment.
