General Statement of Duties

This employee constructs, installs, modifies, maintains, services, troubleshoots, and repairs electrical traffic aids (traffic signals, streetlights, school flashers, etc.) and their accessories (poles, pole foundations, span wires, electrical circuits, fixtures, controls, overhead signage, etc.) in the City's right-of-way.

Minimum Qualifications (KSAs)

(Illustrative only. Any one position may not require all of the listed KSAs nor do the listed examples include all the KSAs which may be required.)

Knowledge of:

Basic arithmetic functions such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of whole numbers, fractions, and decimals using associated measuring devices such as micrometer, tape measure, etc.

Electrical testing equipment.

Safety precautions when working with electricity, around machinery, in traffic, at heights, in confined areas, and with tools in order to protect self and others from injury.

Basic first aid needed for industrial and electrical work environments such as CPR, treatment for electrical burns, shock, etc.

Electrical current flow potential to make certain all equipment and circuits are grounded safely.

Regular and pole line hardware used in conduit, controllers, lights, and other traffic and signal control systems.

Electrical trade language and common symbols used on electrical diagrams.

Basic electrical circuits including parallel and series, for streetlights and traffic lights.

Various methods of joining wires and cables and making connections.

Protective devices used in electrical systems.

Traffic aids and traffic control devices for temporary maintenance of traffic such as cones, barricades, and barrels and how to implement them to create a proper work zone.

Skill to:

Use electrical test equipment safely such as ammeters, voltmeters, meggars, wattmeters.

Install hardware safely.

Use tools such as general construction hand tools, electrical hand tools, and small power tools.

Operate construction equipment safely, such as bucket trucks, digger derrick, backhoe, bobcat, directional boring machine, etc.

Set up scaffolds or other rigging equipment.

Wire controllers, lights, and traffic and signal control systems.

Ability to:

Read, interpret, and familiarize self with electrical and construction drawings and manuals for new equipment.

Direct, oversee, and conduct on-the-job training of new employees.

Understand and carry out verbal and written instructions.

Work in an aerial bucket at heights, while in proximity to live traffic.

Utilize Personal Protective Equipment such as foot, eye, and hearing protection, gloves, and harnesses.

Work in confined spaces.

Climb ladders, scaffolding, etc., and to work at great height in a safe manner.

Descend into manholes, regulators, or interceptors by using ladders to include rope, hoists, etc.

Strength to pull wire safely through conduits, to carry tools, electrical panels, and other heavy equipment, etc.

Read test instrument gauges accurately and observe malfunctioning equipment. Distinguish between basic colors and/or shades of colors.

Manual dexterity and finger dexterity.

Examples of Work Performed

Installs and modifies conduit, poles, circuits, and hardware for new or existing conduit; digs trench or hole; builds forms of wood or metal using saws, hammers, etc.

Installs, replaces, tests, troubleshoots, adjusts, and repairs and maintains lighting fixtures of all types by making necessary wiring connections, splices, etc.

Installs new and/or temporary aerial lines or replaces damaged aerial lines.

Troubleshoots, repairs, or replaces damaged and defective wiring.

Prepares one line and/or schematic drawings or block drawings in order to notify supervision of changes in circuits, wiring connections, and switching.

Maintains complete electrical control systems by determining circuit function and electro-mechanical operation by inspecting, adjusting, cleaning, testing, and repairing.

Troubleshoots, tests, and/or repairs electrically operated controllers; installs new or replaces old wiring in traffic control boxes.

Coordinates electrical work with mechanical maintenance workers in order to assure the work is done correctly.

Drives light and heavy trucks to work sites as required.

Drives bucket trucks, aerial trucks, and similar trucks. Performs related duties as required.

Required Education and Experience

TRANSCRIPT MUST BE ATTACHED OR APPLICATION WILL BE REJECTED

Open:

Each applicant must have two years of full-time, paid experience in basic electrical repair or maintenance work OR successfully completed at least two years of a four-year electrical apprenticeship program.In addition, each applicant must have completed a full trade school program (high school level) in electrical or electronic repair or maintenance OR have 12 credit hours of electrical maintenance and repair courses through an accredited college level program.(Transcript must be attached).

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

Must have a Valid Drivers License.

Must acquire Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Tanker Endorsement.

Must successfully complete: Core Safety Training, Safety Fundamentals Personal Qualifying System (PQS) Training, Electrical Fundamentals (PQS) Training.

When assigned, must be willing to work on irregular and/or rotating, split, or night shifts and to respond to emergency calls when necessary.

Failure to complete all the above requirements within the probationary period will result in failure of probation.

Supervision Exercised

Directs and orients new workers who are assigned to assist on a given project in order to familiarize them with equipment, work locations, work procedures, and to assure their safety.
