About the Position: The Facilities Maintenance Technician positions works independently and collaboratively to maintain all Port Facilities; which include waterfront docks, wharves, piers, and fender systems constructed of steel, reinforced concrete, and heavy timber; pre-engineered steel buildings; steel reinforced concrete aprons and loading docks; concrete and asphalt paved roads and parking lots; rail lines with switches and related equipment; surface and below grade utility systems; heavy industrial equipment including storage tanks and a water tower; fences, seawalls and breakwaters.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Inspect facilities, identify required repairs and maintenance, develop a list of materials, plan and execute the work.
- Periodic inspection of work by contractors to ensure compliance with plans and specifications.
- Assist Facilities Maintenance Technicians in performing other maintenance tasks as required.
- Assist in maintaining operating and maintenance logs on all key components within the refrigeration systems.
- Assist with troubleshooting, maintenance and repair services of contractors that may be called to assist the Port refrigerated systems.
- Maintain a clean and safe work environment.
- Responsible for planning and estimating for small, limited-scope projects.
- Serve as a Line Handler for inbound and outbound ships on a “watch bill” basis.
- Responsible for rough and finished carpentry, including the use of hand tools, power saws, and miscellaneous equipment involved with general facility maintenance and repair.
- Assist with masonry work includes concrete blocks, forming, placing, and finishing concrete, asphalt pavement patching, sheet metal work.
- Pre-engineered steel building construction, maintenance, and repair.
- Assist in the repair and maintenance of Port office buildings, properties, facilities, docks, railroads, transit sheds, grounds, and appliances and to become familiarized with the operation and maintenance of mobile equipment used in these maintenance operations.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Basic mechanical knowledge, including the ability to identify and work with various models of forklifts, manlifts, earth-moving equipment, and landscaping tools.
- Proficient in reading and interpreting blueprints, schematics, and engineering drawings.
- Ability to quickly learn assigned tasks, maintain detailed and accurate records, and adhere to established procedures and safety protocols.
- Strong ability to work independently with minimal supervision as well as collaboratively within a team, fostering a positive team environment and a spirit of cooperation.
- Basic knowledge of residential and commercial HVAC systems.
Qualifications and Experience:
- High School Diploma, or equivalent required.
- A Mississippi Driver’s License required.
- 3 years’ experience in the construction and maintenance of light industrial facilities.
- Experience in general HVAC and Refrigeration repair and maintenance.
- Technical/Trade School for general construction/facility maintenance preferred.
- Broad-based experience in carpentry, masonry, and steel construction preferred.
