Works with other Utility Maintenance Mechanic Apprentice(s) or other employees in carrying out such assignments. In addition to the following duties.
This is maintenance and repair work of electrical and/or mechanical systems on equipment, structure, and vehicles. Incumbent may assist Senior Maintenance Mechanics or Electrician in carrying out specific duty assignments. Incumbent may also work under indirect supervision using independent judgement in carrying out routine duty assignments.Coordinates work with other Utility Maintenance Mechanic Apprentice(s) or other personnel assigned to assist.
Assists in the installation, modification, and repair of mechanical/electrical equipment and structures.
Assists in general maintenance and repair of assigned equipment and machinery including, but not limited to, lubricating pumps and motors; replacing parts; fabricating parts; painting, cleaning tools and equipment; threading, cutting and fitting pipe. Installs new parts and equipment as needed.
Inspects for needed repairs.
Conducts checks of electrical systems to determine repair needs as assigned.
Performs gas and/or arc welding as required using equipment to heat, cut, braze, and weld.
Prepares supply requisitions.
Coordinates work with Utilities Maintenance Mechanic Apprentice(s) or other personnel of lower classifications assigned to assist.
Follows scheduled maintenance programs, keeps routine maintenance records.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS
Knowledge of tools, methods, materials and equipment used in general electrical and/or mechanical system repair.
Knowledge of hazards and applicable safety precautions. Knowledge of welding techniques, depending on assignment.
Ability to follow oral/written instructions.
Ability to read blueprints, schematics, and sketches
Ability to make inspections to determine operating conditions and repair needs.High school graduate or equivalent diploma is required plus two years' experience in the repair and maintenance of electrical and/or mechanical systems in buildings, machinery, or equipment. A combination of education and experience may be considered.Possession of a valid Florida Non-Commercial or commercial driver's license, depending on assignment. Must be able to drive a city vehicle to various places to get materials and/or deliver constructed items on a daily basis.

Ability to operate special equipment such as dump truck, boom truck, air compressor, frequently.
Working knowledge of welding techniques depending on assignment. Incumbents are subject to emergency call-out during off-duty hours and on weekends as required.
Work towards obtaining the Florida Water and Pollution Control Operators Association (FWPCOA) Utility Maintenance Mechanic III certification.

This position is safety sensitive and is subject to testing for alcohol and controlled substances in accordance with the Citys current Drugs and Alcohol policy.

During occasions of local emergencies this position may be require reporting to perform emergency tasks, which may result in extended work hours as well as extended work periods of time away from family members. The Incident Commander and the employee's department head will make the determination as to who will be required to work.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
Requires lift up to 75 pounds with assistance, and/or up to 50 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Must have sufficient physical strength and ability to perform heavy manual labor work occasionally under adverse weather conditions to initiate repairs on an as-needed basis. Additional physical abilities required:
Speaking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken English word including the ability to convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately and concisely. Ability to communicate verbally both in person and over the phone.
Standing: Particularly for sustained periods of time.
Stooping: Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist. Occurs to a considerable degree and requires full motion of the lower extremities and back muscles.
Talking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word including those activities in which they must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly.
Visual Acuity: Have visual acuity to operate motor vehicles, include close vision, distant vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
Walking: Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another. Including ability to walk on uneven terrain and work in unimproved areas under construction during utility installations and maintenance tasks, including ability to enter confined spaces such as well pits, tanks, and valve pits, frequently.
Climbing: Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles and the like, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms. Must be able to climb 20-foot ladder to reach various roofs to perform repairs as needed. Must be able to climb 100-foot access ladder to reach overhead storage tanks, depending on assignment. Body agility is emphasized. Enter confined spaces for internal repairs. Ability to enter confined spaces such as valve pits, tanks, infrequently to perform assigned duties.
Feeling: Perceiving attributes of objects, such as size, shape, temperature or texture by touching with skin, particularly that of fingertips.
Grasping: Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm.
Handling: Picking, holding, or otherwise working, primarily with the whole hand. Must be able to use hand and power tools (these tools are, but are not limited to: table saw, planer, radial arm saw, band saw, drill press, etc.)
and safety equipment required for performance of assigned duties.
Hearing: Perceiving the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction. Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and to make the discrimination in sound.
Kneeling: Bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee or knees.
Lifting: Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position-to-position. Occurs to a considerable degree and requires substantial use of upper extremities and back muscles.
Mental Acuity: Ability to make rational decisions through sound logic and deductive processes.
Pulling: Using upper extremities to exert force in order to draw, haul or tug objects in a sustained motion.
Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
Repetitive Motion: Substantial movements (motions) of the wrist, hands, and/or fingers.
