POSITION SUMMARY
Under general administrative direction performs duties as mechanic; performs skilled tasks in repairing and/or performing preventative maintenance on automobiles, trucks, and equipment. Ability to diagnose and repair the following with little or no supervision: Electric Systems, Hydraulic/Air Brake Systems, Heating/Air Conditioning Systems, Instruments and Gauges, and Preventive Maintenance Service. Performs related work as required.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Performs general mechanical and appearance maintenance and repair work on all motorized equipment, including automobiles, trucks, and specialized equipment (gasoline and diesel powered engines).
- Identify and determine parts required for repair of disassembled units.
- Perform all levels of preventive maintenance services on equipment.
- Identify warrant-able repairs and document on repair order.
- Maintain work area appearance and safety.
- Road test vehicles when necessary to diagnose malfunctions or to ensure that they are working properly.
- Use hand tools such as screwdrivers, pliers, wrenches, pressure gauges, and precision instruments, as well as power tools such as pneumatic wrenches, welding equipment, and jacks and hoists.
- Inspect, test, and listen to defective equipment to diagnose malfunctions, using test instruments such as handheld computers, motor analyzers, chassis charts, and pressure gauges.
- Administers the Transit Division's preventative maintenance program for vehicles and equipment.
- Prepares and maintains accurate records on all vehicles and equipment services.
- Insures adequate inventory of spare parts, tools and supplies.
- Requisitions equipment to be used by City regarding reliability and maintenance costs; assists in preparing specification for equipment.
- Assist with CDL training of new employees.
- Provides general building maintenance supervision and coordinates with inspection services.
- May assist the City Maintenance Garage on an as-needed basis.
- Other duties as assigned.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License at time of hire. Can understand oral and written instructions. Valid Commonwealth of Kentucky Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class A or B or obtain within six (6) months expected. Must be capable of working periodic overtime and available to work on-call as scheduled.
WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Two years of directly related mechanic experience preferred. Specialized training in the repair and replacement of vehicle components highly preferred.
EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
High School graduate or the equivalent.
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Must have mobility and flexibility to inspect vehicles, carry parts, etc.; must possess ability to lift heavy objects; exposed to noise, moving parts, weather, fumes and chemicals.
