The Public Works Department is excited to announce an open recruitment for the position of Maintenance Worker I - Streets Maintenance.

GENERAL PURPOSE :

To perform a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled labor and general maintenance, repair, and construction work functions in the upkeep and care of City infrastructure and facilities; and to operate and/or learn to operate and maintain common and specialized vehicles, equipment, and tools used in completion of work assignments. Positions in this classification may be assigned to work in street, park, building or wastewater collection maintenance and may perform work independently or as part of a work crew with other maintenance staff or staff outside the maintenance division. Positions in this classification may also be required to work in departments other than their primary assigned department, based on the needs of the City as required by the Department Head.

Employees in this position generally provide front line work and are responsible for maintenance of City infrastructure and facilities, including participating in standby duty and call back programs for after-hours and weekend response and emergencies upon demonstrated ability.

This position functions at an entry level for this classification

SUPERVISION RECEIVED :

Works under direct supervision within a framework of well-defined policies and procedures.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

The duties and responsibilities listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Performs a variety of parks and grounds maintenance tasks, including include mowing, watering, raking, pruning, athletic field preparation, and other turf maintenance duties.
  • Assists in the installation, maintenance, and repair of City sidewalks, streets, curbs, gutters, storm drains, and traffic signs.
  • Maintains assigned areas, facilities, and equipment in clean and orderly condition. Cleans restrooms, picks up trash, clears walkways.
  • Operates and may make minor repairs to small-to-medium sized automotive or specialized equipment.
  • Assists in a variety of general maintenance and repair work including carpentry, painting, welding, and plumbing.
  • Assists in the more complex and specialized maintenance and construction tasks as appropriate to assignment. Learns the operation of large and specialized equipment as assigned.
  • Performs electrical and plumbing repairs as needed.
  • Provides scheduled maintenance and repair of assigned equipment including removal, repair, and replacement of various parts and components, tune-ups, oil changes, blade sharpening, etc.
  • Paints interior and exterior surfaces and completes other building related repairs as required.
  • Inspects assigned areas for vandalism and hazardous conditions; makes necessary repairs.
  • Operates and maintains a pick-up truck with lift-gate.
  • Hauls loads to landfill as assigned.
  • Delineates traffic at work areas following established guidelines.
  • Performs a variety of heavy construction, maintenance and repair work in support of special parks and public works projects as assigned.
  • Assists in maintaining records related to duties performed and equipment used.
  • Maintains job request/work order records. Create and monitor project lists.
  • Performs general cleaning and janitorial functions in the upkeep of assigned areas in City buildings including, but not limited to: meeting room preparation; floor maintenance; wall, furniture, woodwork, counter and office equipment; restroom disinfecting, replenishing supplies; metal work, windows and glass doors; waste disposal; light fixtures.
  • Performs minor building maintenance and repair work such as replacing faucet washers, replacing lamps, fixtures, bulbs and tubes, changing air filters, installing shelves, and unclogging toilets and drains; assists with major maintenance work as assigned.
  • May purchase janitorial supplies, light bulbs and other supplies; maintains supplies in a safe manner.
  • Assists with and participates in the Citys special events, including installing traffic control and other preparatory and clean-up activities.
  • Performs related duties similar to the above in scope and function, as required.

Other Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Moves, rearranges and sets up chairs, tables, desks and other furniture and equipment for meetings, classes and other events.
  • Locks and unlocks doors and gates as and when needed to ensure security of buildings and related areas; raises and lowers flags.
  • Participates in the Public Works Departments Standby Duty and Call Back programs for after-hours and weekend maintenance, repairs, and emergencies upon demonstrated ability.
  • Keeps maintenance facility and work areas in a safe, clean, and organized condition.
  • Attends and participates in internal and external safety and certification training.

DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience:

  • Graduation from a standard senior high school or GED equivalent, and
  • Any combination of experience, training and/or education to demonstrate abilities essential to the performance of the position.

Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Some knowledge of the methods, tools, equipment, facilities, materials, and procedures used in maintenance, construction repair activities and/or wastewater collection systems as assigned.
  • Ability to read, write, and maintain routine records at a level sufficient to successfully perform required duties.
  • Ability to safely and effectively operate and/or learn to operate automotive and/or specialized equipment as assigned; learn basic plumbing, electrical and carpentry maintenance techniques; ability to learn turf mowing; practices, procedures, and techniques pertaining to assigned area.
  • Skill in operation of some of the listed tools and equipment.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual tasks for extended periods of time; Ability to work safely; Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments and the public; Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
  • When assigned to wastewater collection maintenance: knowledge of wastewater collection maintenance and operation, work zone traffic control and safety, locating underground utilities, and landscaping/grounds maintenance.
  • Employees assigned to wastewater collection maintenance shall be eligible to be promoted to Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator-in-Training (OIT) after six (6) months of employment from the date of hire and a satisfactory performance review, if the employee elects to begin the process to obtain all necessary requirements for OIT certification.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be able to provide proof of eligibility to work in the United States and complete an Employment Eligibility Verification form.
  • Must possess a valid Class C California Driver License and a satisfactory driving record.
  • Pursuant to California Labor Code Section 3211.9, service is essential in times of extreme emergency or disaster. For this reason, State law designates public employees as Disaster Service Workers. Even when off-duty, this position may be required to return to duty in case of emergency or disaster.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED:

Floor cleaning and polishing machines including vacuums and buffers, power and hand tools, including blowers, mowers, edgers, aerators, chainsaws, jackhammers, cement-finishing tools, paving tools, and ditch witch. Motorized vehicles and equipment, mower, pickup truck, utility truck, tamper, plate compactor, saws, pumps, compressors, sanders, generators, shovels, wrenches, detection devices, mobile radio, phone, and computer.
