ABOUT THIS POSITION

The City of Phoenix Human Services Department (HSD) enhances the health, wellness, and quality of life for Phoenix residents by providing a comprehensive array of services to help people meet emergency, short-and long-term needs; and to help every individual reach their highest level of self-sufficiency.

The Human Services Department is seeking a skilled Building Maintenance Worker to perform journey-level work in the maintenance, repair, alteration, and remodeling of City-owned buildings, offices, houses, and facilities. This role requires a high degree of competence across multiple trades, including rough and finished carpentry, plumbing, roofing, painting, and concrete/masonry, with at least one trade performed at or above the skilled level. Assignments are varied and may be communicated through oral or written work orders, sketches, layouts, or blueprints. The work is carried out independently or as part of a team, with responsibility for selecting appropriate tools, materials, and methods to complete tasks efficiently and safely.

The position may also involve leading small crews or assisting in training Trades Helpers, Laborers, or Groundskeepers. All work is performed under general or specific instructions from a Building Maintenance Foreman, Lead Worker, or supervisor and is subject to inspection during and after completion to ensure compliance with quality and safety standards. The incumbent should be a skilled tradesperson with hands-on experience performing maintenance and repairs across multiple building systems.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

  • Knowledge and skilled in installing, maintaining, and repairing door components which include; locks, closures, door frames and hinges.

SALARY

Pay and Hiring Range: $26.18 to $38.68 per hour.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Three years of skilled level experience in building maintenance and repair work, with a high level of proficiency in at least two of the building trades.
  • Completion of an acceptable apprenticeship program.
  • OR Six years of trades experience, three of which are at the skilled level, with a high level of proficiency in at least two of the building trades.
  • Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted
  • All finalists for positions are subject to a criminal background check applicable to the department or position.
  • Candidates who receive a conditional offer of employment must be fingerprinted and will have their fingerprints used to check the Criminal History Records of the State of Arizona Department of Public Safety and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Any records returned will be reviewed to determine the candidate's suitability for the job.
  • Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The minimum qualifications listed above, plus:

  • Three or more years of journey-level experience in building maintenance, repair, or construction across multiple trades.
  • Experience working in public or commercial facilities, especially in government, educational, or human services environments.
  • Experience inspecting facilities to identify maintenance needs and ensure compliance with safety standards.
  • Experience assisting in the coordination of major repairs or construction projects, and ensuring work is completed to standards and on schedule.
  • Served as a point of contact for contractors and vendors, overseeing contracted work to ensure compliance with scope, safety, and quality standards.
