Under the direction of the Detention Maintenance Supervisor, this position performs a variety of tasks across multiple areas to ensure clean, safe, efficient, and structurally sound facilities. These facilities are designed to provide employees, citizens, taxpayers, visitors, and inmates with an optimal environment for productive work, inmate housing, and the conduct of County business. The position requires strong commitment to ethical standards, professionalism, and safety. Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

Perform general maintenance on the Detention Facilitys buildings and grounds to ensure a high standard of safety and quality that enhances the work environment for County employees.
- Perform a variety of technical and skilled maintenance tasks, including carpentry, plumbing, electrical work, painting, HVAC operations, and repair.
- Continuously seek ways to improve operations, reduce turnaround times, streamline work processes, and enhance customer service.
- Perform landscape and gardening tasks such as planting, transplanting, and maintaining trees, shrubs, grass, and flowers, as well as using fertilization techniques.
- Handle seasonal duties, including snow removal and water line winterization.
- Perform routine maintenance checks and adjust equipment as necessary, such as inspecting refrigeration systems and restarting them.
- Conduct preventative maintenance on building systems and equipment, including HVAC systems and domestic hot water pumps.
- Perform maintenance on various building components, such as ceilings, drywall, caulking, and concrete repairs.
- Maintain air conditioning systems, perform periodic vehicle safety checks, and ensure all systems are operational.
- Provide general carpentry services, including maintaining windows and door frames, fabricating shelving, assembling and repairing furniture, and replacing locks.
Works under the direction of the Detention Maintenance Supervisor.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
This position does not supervise others. Minimum Qualifications:
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or GED; a valid Driver's License.
- At least one year of experience in construction, building maintenance, or mechanical equipment, including HVAC, plumbing, and electrical systems. Certification is preferred.
- Ability to pass pre-employment drug testing, random drug testing, and a background investigation (no felony or moral turpitude charges).
- Basic knowledge of maintenance equipment such as mowers, tractors, trimmers, and landscape and sprinkler system design.
- Knowledge of safety precautions associated with equipment operation.
- Skill in using landscaping tools (e.g., tractors, mowers, chain saws) and various hand and power tools for carpentry, painting, plumbing, and basic mechanics.
- Ability to recognize common weeds and pests, perform skilled building maintenance, and communicate effectively with supervisors, subordinates, and the public.
- Ability to operate equipment such as a motor vehicle, computer, telephone, lawn mower, and hand/power tools.
- Frequently required to sit, speak, hear, and use hands for fine manipulation or to handle objects or controls.
- Must be able to occasionally exert more than 80 pounds of force and occasionally lift over 50 pounds.
- Moderate to strenuous physical activity is required, including walking, standing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, climbing, and balancing.
- Vision requirements include the ability to read documents and use a computer. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
- Primarily office-based, with frequent outdoor work under variable weather conditions, including extreme temperatures.
- Exposure to hazards related to heavy lawn and garden equipment, and the operation of construction equipment (e.g., diesel and gasoline fumes, dust, insects).
- Noise levels vary from quiet in the office to loud in the field.
- The work environment includes fluctuating deadlines, customer interaction, and occasional stress. The employee is on call for emergencies and may work near moving mechanical parts and equipment.
