GENERAL OVERVIEW OF POSITION AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Performs a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled tasks in the maintenance and operation of parks and facilities, public grounds, open spaces, and cemetery.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works under the general guidance and direction of the Public Services Superintendent.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Essential functions of the job may include but are not limited to the following:
  • Mows and maintains park and open space areas; mows weeds; cleans and maintains tennis courts and nets; maintains sprinkler systems and assists in the repair and installation of sprinkler lines and heads.
  • Assists in the maintenance of the municipal swimming pool.
  • Paints and repairs or replaces picnic tables and benches.
  • Performs minor semi-skilled interior building maintenance such as painting, plumbing, carpentry, and other unskilled and semi-skilled trades work.
  • Performs routine maintenance on lawn mowers, power equipment, and irrigation systems.
  • Carries out the seeding, fertilizing, top dressing, soil conditioning, watering, and the pest and weed control of the City's parks and open spaces. Plants lawns, trees, shrubs, and flowers.
  • Operates backhoe, tractors, mowers, jack hammers, welders, trucks, steam cleaners, washers, and other listed equipment as needed.
  • Skills and knowledge in the proper and safe techniques of parks, facilities and cemetery maintenance functions.
  • Performs custodial work as required and assigned, including: change light bulbs, sweep floors, dump garbage and reline cans with liners, clean and sanitize restrooms and replenish supplies, clean spills, clean drinking fountains, mirrors, tables, walls, fixtures, light fixtures, etc., walls, metal and woodwork.
  • Collects and disposes of solid waste from port-a-pots; picks up litter from premises.
  • Opens and closes, locks and unlocks facilities as needed.
  • Prepares facilities for park and recreation program use.
  • Assists in the construction of new parks facilities, including clearing, grading, drainage, and foundation work.
  • Keeps records of work completed.
  • Open and closing of graves.
  • Assists in locating of lots and open spaces in the Cemetery.
NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Attendance at training, workshops and seminars.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Some knowledge of equipment, materials and supplies used in parks, facilities and cemetery maintenance; some knowledge of equipment and supplies used to do minor repairs; some knowledge of first aid and applicable safety precautions.
  • Skill in operation of listed tools and equipment.
  • Ability to work independently and to complete daily activities according to work schedule.
  • Ability to use equipment and tools properly and safely.
  • Ability to understand, follow, and transmit written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, and the public.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • High school diploma or acceptable equivalent.
CERTIFICATION(S) AND LICENSE(S)
  • Must possess a valid driver's license with a safe driving record as determined by the employer.
  • Must be able to obtain Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within sixty (60) days of employment.
  • Must obtain and maintain a Non-Doc Card from the Department of Corrections.
PRE- EMPLOYMENT TESTING
Components of the following pre-employment testing may be conducted and must be successfully completed by the employee:
  • Criminal history background checks.
  • Physical Capacity Profile Level 4.
  • Drug screen.
  • Alcohol testing.
  • TB Skin Test.
  • Blood Type.
