Job Position Title: Mechanic
Supervisor: Transportation Director
Status: Classified Employee
Job Goal: Assist the transportation director in the maintenance and upkeep of all district vehicles. It is the goal every position to provide services which will ensure the successful and efficient operations of the FCSD.
Qualifications:
High School diploma or equivalent
Commercial Driver's License with air brake, passenger and "S" endorsements
Have a working knowledge of mechanical components, diesel systems, air brakes and any other system related to the district vehicles
Ability to positively interact with support staff/district employees and community members
Ability to meet deadlines
Be able to conduct heavy lifting
Successfully complete a DOT physical as per required by the State of Iowa
Responsibilities:
Adhere to applicable state and federal laws, rules, and regulations, safety standards, board policies and administrative rules.
The mechanic will be responsible in assisting or completing the described duties under the direction and supervision of the head mechanic.
Complete overhaul of engines, transmissions and differentials on all buses.
Complete brake service, replacing brake shoes, overhaul wheel cylinders and repacking wheel bearings.
Repair and maintain all lighting systems on the buses.
Repair and paint minor body damage.
Operate the school wrecker when necessary.
Service all vehicles on a 2000 mile rotation. This would include grease, oil change and visual inspection of the vehicle.
Have the ability to do welding operations.
Repair, replace and maintain seats on the buses.
Repair or replace exhaust systems.
Assist in keeping all vehicles clean.
Maintain a preventative maintenance program for all district vehicles. This would include a periodic check of brakes, tires, belts, tie-rod ends, drag links and lights.
Have a working knowledge of diesel engines and associated components.
Have a working knowledge of air brake systems.
Keep the Head Mechanic informed of inventory and supply counts. The mechanic will order supplies and parts under the direction of the Head Mechanic.
Maintain records for all district vehicles including maintenance history, parts used and anticipated future needs for that vehicle
Check vehicle tires as to wear or damage.
Keep the bus garage clean.
Assist with the summer maintenance program for all district buses.
The mechanic will be on duty at all times when buses are on the road. If a situation occurs after hours or on the weekend, overtime will be given.
Substitute bus driving will be expected when needed.
Maintenance and repair will be expected on other district equipment when needed.
The mechanic will obtain approval from the Head Mechanic for major purchases, vehicle problems and any pertinent information regarding the vehicle upkeep.
Work with the maintenance department as a "team"
Complete all general duties and tasks associated with this assigned position in a timely and efficient manner.
The listed responsibilities would be typical. Other responsibilities may be assigned by the Director of Auxiliary Services on an "as needed" basis.
Terms of Employment
Salary, hours and work year to be established by the Superintendent with approval of the Board of Education.
Hours- School year 7:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. 1 hour lunch (Assignment may vary)
Summer 6:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. MTWTR 1/2 hour lunch
