Job Output: Under the direction of the Engineering and Maintenance Manager, this position is to be responsible for performing a variety of tasks critical to supporting the safe operation of the maintenance department in accordance with company guidelines and customer requirements. Performance of these tasks are critical to the Safety, Quality, Reliability and Cost of the plant production lines, paint mix area, environmental area, shipping area and general plant facilities. This position must work to identify and resolve any maintenance issue or problem along with collaboratively working with all different levels of the organization to resolve issues. This position will receive frequent direction and supervision from the plant Engineering and Maintenance Manager.

Key Process (Ownership/Participation) Include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Ensure the Safe Operation of the Department

  • Drives a strong safety focus and owns safety (above productivity) in the maintenance area by talking about safety in team meetings, identifying potential safety issues during the shift and mitigating those risks through coaching.
  • Addresses any safety issues and takes corrective action as necessary.
  • Conducts periodic safety walk-throughs of maintenance activities, visually checking to make sure employees are wearing proper PPE, identifying safety issues, and looking for anyone performing their job tasks in an at-risk manner.
  • Helps safety committee representatives on their teams be successful by providing resources and support, removing road blocks and facilitating the execution of safety improvement ideas and work orders.
  • Works in a safe manner, complying with and supporting safety policies and procedures and supports and actively participates in the Hilliard plants safety system processes (risk assessments, coaching, incident investigations, etc.).

Drive Daily Line/Area Performance

  • Works with Engineering and Maintenance Manager, Plant Capital Project Engineers, Value Stream Managers and other team leads to set the strategy and priorities for the maintenance department
    • Is a key owner and driver of daily back to standard issue resolution. Familiar with Quick Kaizen, 3C, 5 Why,5S, Gemba Walks, etc.
    • Ensures safe and successful execution of base maintenance systems through others in the maintenance department (PM, PdM, Lubrication, WO, Stores)
  • Owns team knowledge of maintenance SQDC metrics and drives understanding of these metrics through the maintenance group.
  • Manage shift assignments, work order / PM scheduling, vacation schedule and attendance of the maintenance group.
  • Provides leadership, development, coaching and offers constructive criticism to team members relative to deviations from standard work and acceptable levels of craftsmanship.
  • Administer discipline as needed along with participation in high level investigations as needed.
  • Uses data to identify and execute reliability process improvement opportunities within the maintenance department.

Support the Team Environment

  • Drive team/area reliability commitments by providing the resources and support needed by teams, removing road blocks, and helping with process improvement ideas.
  • Lead and/or facilitate quick process improvement initiatives for maintenance department as needed.
  • Encourages team engagement and team contributions in decision making.
  • Improves the work performance of others through coaching / mentoring.
  • Recognizes people for their performance through either formal or informal processes.
  • Sets the tone for work ethic on the team.
  • Mentors employees and drives employee engagement.
  • Engages in development of associates to enhance and improve team performance. Regularly assesses associate performance, both formally and informally, and provides developmental and positive feedback as appropriate.

Team/Plant Integration

  • Works collaboratively with other Leads and Plant Leaders throughout the plant, including Production Team Leads and Shipping.
  • Encourages team engagement and team contributions in decision making by the manner in which they communicate, by listening to the input of team members.
  • Ensures the training & development needs of the team are addressed and scheduled based on plant needs and employee needs.
  • Log and track required and assigned paperwork and other documentation in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Ensure smooth start-ups, shutdowns, and hand-offs between shifts.
  • Sees that the team is communicating effectively internally and externally.
  • Serves as main point of contact between maintenance and other departments.
  • Models customer service based relationship with plant operations group and other plant departments.
  • Assists with alignment and training for maintenance support on capital engineering projects.
Qualifications:

To perform this job successfully, the individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.   • Must have basic knowledge of lean tools. Track record of utilizing basic lean tools and principles in meeting daily plant goals (MDI, QK,, 5y) preferred.
  • Must have leadership, organizational, and interpersonal skills including team building and individual performance improvement.
  • Must be able to clearly communicate area/plant goals, issues, and plant/corporate messages to employees.
  • Must be able to work overtime as needed.
  • Must have at least 3-5 years technical support experience in a manufacturing setting.
  • Must be willing to work various hours and shifts as needed to accomplish tasks and be able to work without direct supervision and have an excellent balance between people and the tasks at hand and ability to work and be attentive to a team environment.
  • Must be able to operate a computer. Experience with frequently used software, including but not limited to the following: MS Word, MS Excel, Power Point, Outlook, Mx, Internet Explorer, and SAP, is preferred.

Educational Requirement: BS in Engineering, or other technically equivalent certification, or relevant work experience managing a team.

Organizational Relationships:

  • Direct supervision from Engineering and Maintenance Manager
  • Works closely with capital engineers, support group team leaders and VSMs
  • Works with staff group to assure any process related issues are addressed
  • Works closely with all associates
