Position Summary & Responsibilities
Position Summary:
This position will perform general maintenance functions for the Topeka Correctional Facility. The incumbent will provide training and supervision to an offender crew in the installation, maintenance, construction, repair and operation of the physical plant and grounds of the facility with emphasis in electrical systems. The supervisor assigns specific tasks to offenders and reviews their work to assure accurate and timely completion of projects. Also reviews blueprints and drawings and maintains inventories of all tools and equipment.
Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:
- Supervises and trains resident workers in the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical systems within the Topeka Correctional Facility complex by using technical manuals and electrical tools in order to teach them to install and repair motor controllers, wiring, and other electric fixtures in any of the buildings of the Topeka Correctional Facility.
- Assigns specific electrical tasks to offenders, constantly reviewing their work, to assure accurate and timely completion of projects. Reviews blueprints and drawings to ensure that projects are performed properly and in the most feasible and economic manner.
- Inventories all tools and equipment by visually inspecting and counting each tool or piece of equipment to ensure that tools and equipment are accurately accounted for upon completion of each shift or job; that they are kept clean and in good repair; and to prevent offenders from taking unauthorized tools, equipment and uniforms to the living area.
- Keeps administration officials informed of any situation that develops during tour of duty by submitting reports on the work progress of the offenders or on accidents, fire hazards or infractions of rules to ensure the smooth and orderly operation of the facility.
- Inspects all electrical projects by visually looking at or checking the project for proper installation to ensure quality of work performed and to ensure that work is installed in accordance with local and state electrical codes.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
Five years of experience in the mechanical or building trades. Education may be substituted for experience as determined relevant by the agency.
Preferred Qualifications:
Minimum of three years' experience at the journeyman level in the building trades including at least one year of supervisory experience.
Post-Offer, Pre-employment Requirements:
- Must have a Valid High School Diploma or Equivalent.
- Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position.
- Must take and pass drug screen unless the incumbent is moving from one safety-sensitive position to another safety-sensitive position within the same agency, background check, and Tuberculosis (TB) test.
- Must be a current United States Citizen and possess a valid Driver's License.
- Must have an EPA approved CFC and general refrigerant reclamation certification.
