Maintenance Superintendent

This position will coordinate and oversee the daily hands-on activities of maintenance with primary efforts directed toward keeping plant equipment operational and reliable; execution of projects; optimizing the use of money, materials, manpower and machinery; and maintaining high standards of safety, housekeeping, and employee relations. This position is responsible for establishing and tracking Key Performance Indicators related to maintenance excellence, including cost, planning, and maintenance strategy.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Responsible for maintaining plant operating equipment in a safe, reliable working condition while continuously improving reliability and strengthening our safety, health, environmental, and loss control performance
  • Develop and administer programs for routine and preventive maintenance and plan maintenance workload to obtain high utilization of manpower and non-labor resources
  • Perform root-cause failure analysis and implement changes to prevent repeat failures. Document all changes and review all similar equipment
  • Assist maintenance and operations in troubleshooting mechanical problems when necessary
  • Assist with outage planning and execution for planned and unplanned outages
  • Review the spare parts stored in the warehouse, at least yearly, to ensure that parts are available as required for breakdown maintenance
  • Assure that proper tools are available for craftsmen to complete the job and that vendor part quality meets specifications. Identify needs and utilize resources to set up training for craftsmen
  • Identify recurring mechanical problems in process equipment and develop and implement solutions using accepted engineering rules and practices
  • Safety & Loss Control responsibilities as required achieving plant objectives. Monitor safety hazards that could cause harm to personnel and equipment. Conduct loss control tours as assigned
  • Assure capital projects are developed consistent with Baystar - Bayport Polymers guidelines. Manage execution of projects under $1MM, or larger if necessary
  • Understand, support, and comply with all plant safety policies and procedures including the use of loss control software for loss control reporting and communication
  • Direct and manage the site maintenance staff to implement best maintenance practices and provide technical expertise to reduce costs and improve process uptime and mechanical reliability
  • Direct the planning and scheduling program, and its effectiveness, through the use of established benchmarks and parameters
  • Control maintenance expenditures within budget requirements by monitoring expenditures, adjusting priorities, and forecasting maintenance needs
  • Coordinate and direct the use of outside resources assigned to the plant
  • Coordinate with engineers for capital project execution to ensure effective use of capital funds
  • Manage the plant designated critical spare inventory and tracking and report to plant management
  • Support and enforce management objectives, directives, and guidelines during daily interaction with all Baystar employees and contractors
  • Provide direction and make tactical decisions while executing long term planning, driving improvement and optimization
  • Develop budgets and manage costs for assigned cost centers along with monthly forecasts to consistently meet spend commitments
  • Coach and assist supervisors in executing short range planning as they supervise daily and weekly activities (both planned and unplanned) of employees and contractors, ensuring timely completion and quality of work in a proactive manner
  • Provide technical guidance and expertise, identifying performance gaps and implementing training plans
  • Track and evaluate department performance using Key Performance Indicators in alignment with Leadership initiatives
  • Establish clear objectives for direct reports, communicating goals and providing performance feedback through ongoing and annual performance reviews
  • Allocate resources effectively and fully utilize assets to produce optimal results
  • Address personnel matters for subordinates (performance reviews, overtime, absenteeism control, etc.), consulting with management and HR when appropriate
  • Evaluate performance and competencies of direct reports and carry out disciplinary action as needed
  • Ensure all company policies and procedures are followed
  • Requires on-call duties, and the successful candidate must be able to respond 24/7, 100% of the time to plant emergencies on short notice, including nights, weekends, and holidays while on-call
  • Position is located in a chemical processing facility and requires overtime to meet plant needs, including alternative shifts as needed to meet facility needs

QUALIFICATIONS / EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Chemical Engineering (other engineering/ technical degrees or multiple years of experience will be considered depending on the experience of the individual)
  • 5 years' experience with plant operations is critical (maintenance experience a plus)
  • 5 years' experience managing people or project teams
  • Knowledge of Engineering, and/or construction management practices
  • Experience with common operations processes
  • Knowledge of employee relations, applicable safety and environmental regulations, federal and state regulations, and technical standards
  • Exceptional Computer literacy. Very strong skills in the use of word processing, spreadsheet, flow-charting, project scheduling, databases, data analytics tools
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills (e.g., presentation, listening, report writing).
  • Strong team-working skills and ability to manage/produce in a culturally and geographically diverse, multi-company, matrix organization
  • Excellent planning, organization, and time management skills as an individual and as a manager
  • Experience in challenging processes, decisions and plans at levels up to senior management

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS / EXPERIENCE

  • Master's degree in engineering from an accredited institution
  • 10+ years of work experience in a manufacturing or operations environment
  • 2+ years of work experience in Lean, Continuous Improvement or Operations of Excellence
  • 7+ years managing people or project teams
  • Lean Six Sigma, Agile or equivalent qualification preferred

PHYSICAL CAPACITY REQUIREMENTS

This position requires the incumbent to:

  • Follow site safety requirements for the role and wear mandatory FRC and PPE (foot, head, ear, eye, hand, and fall protection) when inside plant environment or where directed by signage or procedure
  • Read and understand technical documents and procedures in English
  • Specific vision abilities include near, far, and intermediate distances, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception
  • Required to work at ground level, from ladders, and from heights greater than 250' above grade on fixed platforms, mobile equipment platforms, and scaffolding
  • Ascend and descend stairs and stationary vertical ladders with and without a safety cage
  • Access confined spaces and pressure vessels through standard 24" manways
  • Must be capable of lifting/carrying/pushing/pulling up to 50 pounds
  • Frequent bending, reaching, stooping, crawling, walking, and climbing
  • Sit or stand for extended periods of time
  • Work at computer for significant periods of time throughout the day
  • Required to reach overhead and at shoulder level with hands and arms
  • Must demonstrate fine and gross motor coordination including pinching, gripping, turning, and keyboarding of both hands
  • Move about uneven surfaces, including catwalks, deck grating, and wet and muddy areas
  • Work outside in all weather conditions walking up to mile per job
