Definition

Definition: Under general supervision of the Department of Corrections Director, performs a variety of skilled and semi skilled maintenance and repairs related to the building and utilities services systems of the SRPMIC Department of Corrections. This job class is treated as FLSA non-exempt.

Examples of Tasks

  1. Project Coordination: Coordinates, schedules, and assists with the timely completion of all DOC building maintenance projects.
  • Plans, schedules and monitors daily work activities of subordinate workers to ensure tasks are completed in the scheduled timeframe and are in accordance with established standards guidelines, and plans.
  • Resolves day to day problems and questions regarding appropriate materials, methods and procedures to be used in completing assigned projects.
  • Ensures that all OSHA standards are met and recommends work stoppage if safety or building code violations occur.
  • Determines when the project to be completed is beyond the capabilities of the individual in the job class and coordinates with supervisor to get assistance from Public Works or other outside contractor.
  1. Cost Control: Monitors and maintains maintenance cost records and ensures all materials and supplies are properly inventoried and maintained.
  • Provides oversight and maintains a record system of all materials used for end of year reports.
  • Participates in the planning and estimating of materials cost associated with remodeling and construction of various projects.
  1. Building Maintenance: Assists with performing projects and reviewing and work of other staff to ensure all projects are completed according to required work specifications.
  • Remodels buildings by removing paint and/or paneling, knocking down non-load bearing walls, constructing new walls in accordance with plans or sketches, and installing, taping, and painting sheet rock; hauls trash from project to landfill.
  • Installs/repairs heating and cooling systems in new facilities and replaces non-working systems in existing facilities; repairs electrical appliances such as refrigerator and water coolers; runs electrical wiring to provide new circuits or replace inadequate circuits.
  • Performs a variety of building maintenance and repair tasks, including changing light bulbs, painting, doing basic carpentry, and installing and repairing plumbing and electrical fixtures; cleans out clogged drains and sewer lines.
  1. Miscellaneous: Responds to emergency situations and performs other job-related duties to enhance departmental goals as required by the Director or Assistant Corrections Director.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics:

  • Knowledge of basic principles and practices of employee supervision and training.
  • Knowledge of building maintenance and repair procedures and practices.
  • Knowledge of basic carpentry practices.
  • Knowledge of basic plumbing installation, maintenance, and repair practices.
  • Knowledge of basic electrical system installation, maintenance, and repair practices.
  • Knowledge of basic heating and cooling system installation, maintenance, and repair practices.
  • Knowledge of hazards and necessary safety precautions applicable to building maintenance work.
  • Knowledge of tools and materials used in building maintenance and construction work.
  • Knowledge of State and Federal OSHA health and safety standards and guidelines.
  • Skill in planning and assigning the work of subordinate staff to ensure projects are completed in accordance with established standards, guideline, and time frames.
  • Skill in completing basic remodeling projects.
  • Skill in following oral and written instructions and procedures.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with other staff and the public.
  • Skill I supervising and training subordinate staff.
  • Skill in installing, maintaining, and repairing heating and cooling systems.
  • Skill in installing, maintaining, and repairing electrical circuits.
  • Skill in installing, maintaining, and repairing plumbing fixtures.
  • Ability to move heavy objects long distances (more than 20 feet).
  • Ability to work in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to the elements.
  • Ability to lift arms above shoulder.
  • Ability to read high work areas by climbing, ladders, steps, or using scaffolding.
  • Ability to work at heights greater than ten feet.
  • Ability to use graphic instructions such as blueprints, layouts, or other visual aids.
  • Ability to comprehend and make inferences from written material.
  • Ability to bend or stoop repeatedly or continually over time.
  • Ability to respond to emergency repair calls at any time and under a variety of weather conditions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other staff and the public.

Minimum Qualifications

Education & Experience: Graduation from high school or GED and a minimum of five (5) years full-time building maintenance or construction/building trades work and one of the five years spent supervising building maintenance workers; or completion of a post high school program in building maintenance or one of the construction/building trades may substitute for one year of the required experience.

Equivalency: Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience that would allow the candidate to satisfactorily perform the duties of this position, will be considered.

Underfill Eligibility: An enrolled Community Member whom closely qualifies for the minimum qualifications for a position may be considered for employment under SRPMIC Policy 2-19, Underfill.

Special Requirements

  • Ability to pass an extensive criminal background/fingerprint check conducted by our Department of Corrections.

  • Ability to work inside a Corrections facility with inmates.

Prior to hire as an employee, applicants will be subject to drug and alcohol testing. Will be required to pass a pre-employment background/fingerprint check.
