Substation Maintenance Worker

The City of Redding - Electric Utility (REU) is seeking a highly motivated individual to join our team as a Substation Maintenance Worker. This position is responsible for substation inspections, contractor escorts, oil handling practices, disposal of hazardous materials, utility equipment operator and assisting in substation maintenance tasks. The ideal candidate will possess a valid CA Class A CDL, the skills to obtain crane operator certification, basic computer knowledge, ability to communicate clearly and work independently, familiarity with hazard material shipping regulations and one year experience preforming duties in an energized high voltage electrical station and/or related facility.

  • Conduct inspections and assist with maintenance of electrical equipment.
  • Read station power meters and record data from meters and equipment instrumentation. Inspect equipment for signs of damage or malfunction and check indicator lights.
  • Obtain oil samples from transformers; wipe/clean minor oil spills; maintain, clean, and operate oil filtration trailer; change nitrogen gas cylinders; maintain station identification and high voltage signs; paint equipment; and maintain station yards.
  • Record and transfer substation data using computers.
  • Escort and observe contractor working in substations.
  • Organize salvage distribution transformers, maintain transformer oil pcb program, and maintain waste oil disposal program.
  • Maintain and organize parts inventories in transformer shop and substation storerooms.
  • Be knowledgeable and proficient in the handling practices of SF6 gas used in high voltage circuit breakers.

  • Knowledge of electrical substation functions, equipment and related safety rules
  • Knowledge of meter reading; and basic mathematics
  • Ability to interact effectively with the public and other employees
  • Ability to perform inspection and maintenance duties safely
  • Ability to read instruments and devices
  • Ability to calculate and record data using computers
  • Ability to use power tools
  • Ability to work as a crew member or alone

Education, Experience, and Special Requirement:

Any combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying.

  • Typical education would include high school diploma, or equivalent.
  • Typical experience would include one year performing related duties in an energized high voltage electrical station and/or related facilities.
  • Possession of the appropriate California driver's license, or the ability to acquire one within ten days of appointment.
  • Forklift operators certification and crane operator certification required within one year of employment (City will provide training).
  • Must be able to enter and work in confined spaces, participate in the Confined Space Program, and perform confined space rescue.

Veteran's Credit: Applicants who attach a copy of the DD-214 to their application indicating Honorable Discharge from military service and receive a passing score on the examination process will have two (2) additional points added to their final examination score.
