Water Supply Division: The City of Jacksonville operates the City's wells, storage facilities, water treatment, and pumping facilities in order to provide an adequate, reliable, safe, and palatable water supply to the community. Using nanofiltration, the City's water plant provides drinking water that meets higher standards than that of bottled water. This new plant has the capability for desalination, if needed, to help in producing water that is palatable.

General Description:The City of Jacksonville is seeking a Plants Maintenance Mechanic to work in the Water Supply Division. The Plants Maintenance Mechanic performs intermediate skilled work in the maintenance and repair of specialized machinery and equipment in a water or wastewater treatment plants and related facilities; does related work as required. Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Plants Maintenance Supervisor or Chief Plant Operator.

This position generally works Monday through Thursday from 6:00 AM to 3:00 PM and Friday from 6:00 AM to 10:00 AM. Every fifth week or as the schedule requires the Plant Maintenance Mechanic works Friday from 6:00 AM to 3:00 PM and is on call for the weekend. The Plants Maintenance Mechanic must be within 50 miles of the Water Supply Plant when they are on call.

The salary posted is the full salary range for this position. The starting salary is expected to be in the range of $41,158.62 - $53,506.34 depending on qualifications.

Essential Functions/Typical Tasks

Maintaining and repairing treatment plants equipment, storage tanks, wells and lift stations; assisting with the installation of plant equipment.

  • Monitors and inspects stations on fixed schedule; responds to plant and station alarms.
  • Operates and maintains plants, structures, equipment, machinery, controls, motors, pumps, SCADA systems and all related facilities.
  • Performs repairs on pump motors and related equipment used for water or wastewater treatment lift stations, wells, storage tanks, etc.;
  • Uses hand, bench and machine tools in the repair and maintenance of pumps, motors, valves and other machinery and mechanical and electrical equipment.
  • Replaces and repairs bearings, shafts, sleeves, gate valves, check valves and other parts.
  • Oversees, operates and maintains land treatment site and equipment.
  • Adjusts, repairs and replaces parts; replaces motor controllers, relays, transformers and timers.
  • Installs, maintains and repairs plant electrical equipment.
  • Troubleshoots power system problems, problems with telemetry systems and radio transmitting units.
  • Cleans and maintains lift stations and lift station equipment.
  • Maintains and tests generators; ensures emergency generators are functioning properly.
  • Lubricates and changes oil in equipment.
  • Performs related tasks as required.

Required Education and Experience

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school or vocational school including or supplemented by courses in the mechanical and/or electrical trade and 2 years experience in water and/or wastewater treatment plant maintenance work.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

General knowledge of standard practices, methods, tools and materials of the electrical and mechanical trades; general knowledge of the occupational hazards connected with general maintenance operations and ability to take and enforce appropriate safety precautions; thorough knowledge of electrical test equipment and OSHA requirements for confined space entry; ability to work from sketches and to understand and carry out oral and written instructions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates; skill in the use and care of bench and hand tools, machines and equipment.
