Job Summary
Perform highly skilled work in the checking, inspection, repair, maintenance and installation of hydro power plant equipment and apparatus. The following list sets forth the principal duties required for the job. This list is not intended to limit assignment of work or the degree of supervision under all operating conditions. Employee may perform miscellaneous, related, and incidental work in addition to that specifically outlined below.Job Description
** This position will require travel 50%-75% of the time. Travel for this role will be in the APCO Hydro foot print (Virginia and West Virginia)**
Hydro Mechanic D:
What You'll Do:
- Utilize a working knowledge of hand tools and portable power tools and their correct usage in order to maintain plant equipment.
- Utilize a working knowledge of basic measuring tools such as rules, scales, straight edges, dividers, squares and protractors, layout simple figures on flat surfaces.
- Calculate areas, volumes, weights, etc. utilizing basic mathematical concepts.
- Comprehend moderately complex written material such as procedures, instructions, technical manuals, etc.
- Assist employees of a higher classification.
- Prepare and maintain records as required. This will include the accurate completion of job orders and writing new ones.
- Assist in obtaining clearance permits and ensure that the equipment to be worked on has been properly cleared and tagged before work begins.
- Learn and comply with AEP safety/environmental/health policies as well as regulatory policies.
- Assist engineers and others with root cause determination of equipment/component failures.
- Assist employees and perform similar or less skilled duties as assigned.
What We're Looking For:
Education requirements are listed below:
- Associate degree in engineering, industrial or energy technology; OR Associate degree in another discipline and two (2) years of related work experience OR high school diploma with four (4) years of related work experience; OR high school diploma with two (2) years of related military experience. Related experience is listed under Principal Accountabilities.
Work Experience requirement listed below:
- Must satisfactorily complete, in such time frames as may be established by the company, all required training, testing, and job demonstrations to advance to the Hydro Mechanic "C" classification, or vacate the Hydro Mechanic "D" classification.
Required License(s)/Certification(s) are listed below:
- Must possess a valid State driver's license; may also be required to obtain other licenses required to operate applicable plant vehicles and equipment.
Other Must Haves:
- These are additional expectations for the job and could include specific work experience, license / certifications, preemployment testing, expectations about travel, shift work, etc.
- Physical demand level is Medium and requirements details are listed below:
- Advancement will be based on an individuals demonstrated ability to meet the Qualifications requirements and perform the applicable C grade job duties as set forth in this Job Specification.
- Work shift schedule as well as irregular hours, and respond to calls outside of scheduled hours as required by the job.
- Ability and willingness to make independent decisions necessary for proper performance of job duties when the nature of the job requires working alone or working without supervision.
- Willingness to assist with work, when the need arises, in any department or phase of the Companys operations for which qualified.
- 50%-75% of travel time associated with this position.
- Must complete all required training and testing requirements as established by the company.
- Must be able to learn the rules, safety practices and procedures applicable to the work. Must be able to learn the tools and equipment and their use as required in the work. Must be able to read, interpret and work from simple prints and specifications and have the ability to gain a working knowledge of OSHA and Environmental guidelines.
- Perform work in confined spaces, at heights such as elevated walkways and platforms, and over grated openings.
- Work outdoors during inclement weather.
- Climb ladders & stairs a number of times each day.
- Use fine dexterity to move switches & controls to precise location.
- Detect color on alarms, equipment & other devices.
- Hear announcements on the Plant PA system, and to hear abnormal sounds of plant equipment.
- Communicate plant information by phone, in person or by radio.
- Exert up to 50 lbs. of pressure to manually turn off valves.
- Able to stand or walk continuously for up to 12 hours.
Hydro Mechanic C:
What You'll Do:
- Assist in the assembly and disassembly of equipment.
- Assist in the lubrication, monitoring and repair of all kinds of equipment, including turbines, generators, pumps, valves, fans, control devices, as well as other assorted equipment.
- Participate in the surveillance, monitoring, preventative and corrective maintenance of various pieces of equipment as well as structures such as dams, gates, hoists, etc.
- Assist in equipment/plant operations as required and contractor oversight as needed.
- Provide assistance to employees of a higher classification.
- Prepare and maintain records as required. This will include the accurate completion of job order requests and all work associated with the work management system.
- Obtain clearance permits and determine that the equipment to be worked on has been properly cleared and tagged (upon completion of the appropriate training).
- Assist engineers and others with root cause determination of equipment/component failures.
- Assist employees and perform similar or less skilled duties as assigned.
What We're Looking For:
Education requirements are listed below:
- Associate degree in engineering, industrial or energy technology; OR Associate degree in another discipline and two (2) years of related work experience; OR high school diploma with four (4) years of related work experience OR high school diploma with two (2) years of related military experience. Related experience is listed under Principal Accountabilities.

- At least 4,160 hours of power plant experience as a Hydro Mechanic "D" or the equivalent. Must satisfactorily complete, in such time frames as may be established by the company, all required training, testing, and job demonstrations to advance to the Hydro Mechanic "B" classification, or vacate the Hydro Mechanic "C" classification.
Required License(s)/Certification(s) are listed below:
- Must possess a valid State driver's license; may also be required to obtain other licenses required to operate applicable plant vehicles and equipment.

What You'll Do:
- Assemble and disassemble equipment; heat, bend, form and cut material even with limited instruction.
- Lubricate, monitor and repair all kinds of turbines, generators, pumps, valves, fans, devices, accessories, and all plant equipment as required.
- Conduct surveillance of and maintenance of various pieces of equipment.
- Perform calculations to determine weight and center of gravity to ensure accurate rigging and lifting/movement of equipment.
- Be qualified to operate machine shop equipment such as drill presses, band saw, grinders, sharpeners, and pipe threading equipment, etc., operate powered tools and hand tools and operate moving and lifting equipment.
- Perform equipment/plant operations as required.
- Prepare and maintain records, job orders, etc.
- Obtain, prepare and complete clearance permits and ensure that equipment to be worked on is properly cleared and tagged.
- Assist employees and perform similar or less skilled duties as assigned.
What We're Looking For:
Education requirements are listed below:
