The Department:

The Department of Public Works (DPW) constructs, maintains and improves various components of the Citys infrastructure and provides quality, cost-effective, timely services to the residents and businesses of Santa Clara. DPW is responsible for a wide variety of programs throughout the City which includes:

  • design,
  • construction management,
  • stormwater pollution prevention,
  • inspection and maintenance of City streets, sidewalks, storm drain systems,
  • traffic signs and markings,
  • street trees,
  • landscaping and the closed landfill.

The Department oversees the coordination and management support for the Convention Center Maintenance District, which consists of Hyatt Regency, Techmart, and the City, and maintains the grounds of the Franklin Square complex under the Downtown Parking Maintenance District. DPW manages solid waste contracts which provide services such as garbage, yard waste, recycling, street sweeping, household hazardous waste and the annual Clean-Up Campaign.

The Position:

The Street Maintenance Worker I is the entry-level classification in the Street Maintenance Worker series. An incumbent in this classification performs the basic labor tasks required of the Street, Storm, Traffic, and Landscape Maintenance divisions of the Public Works Department. Assignments are generally limited in scope and performed within a procedural framework established by The Department of Public Works.This recruitment may be used to fill multiple positions in this, or other divisions or departments. The annual salary range for this position is $79,203.48 - $101,387.88. This position may be filled at or near the minimum of the salary range.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Minimum Education Requirements:

  • Graduation from high school or possession of a GED;

Minimum Experience Requirements:

  • One (1) year of recent experience in construction; grounds, landscape, street, water/sewer, or building maintenance; and/or as a member of a traffic field crew.

Acceptable Substitution:

None.

License/Certifications:

  • Possession of a valid Class C California driver's license is required at time of appointment and for duration of employment
  • Attain and maintain a Traffic Flagging and Safety Certificate prior to completing probation

For Street, Storm, and Traffic Divisions:

  • Possession of a valid Class A or Class B Commercial driver's license required within the first year of appointment.
  • Grounds Maintenance Worker I's in the Public Works Department re-classified to Street Maintenance Worker I shall be grandfathered for the duration of their City employment in the Street Maintenance Worker I classification from the California Class A or B Commercial Driver's License requirement.

For Landscape Division:

  • Attain and maintain a California Department of Food and Agriculture Qualified Applicator Certificate (QAC) in categories B, C or F prior to completing probation.

Other Requirements:

  • May be required to work odd and unusual hours in the performance of duties and in emergency situations
  • Incumbents with a Class A or B Commercial driver's license may be subject to drug and/or alcohol testing as mandated by federal regulations
  • Must be able to perform all of the essential functions of the job assignment
