(This recruitment series is to fill one open position within the Facilities Division. To be considered qualified, an applicant must meet the minimum requirements for one of the following three levels of the Facilities Maintenance Worker positions.)

PURPOSE OF POSITION:

Performs a variety of unskilled, semi-skilled and skilled tasks related to area of assignment within public works including facilities, cemetery, and parks.

This description covers the most significant essential and auxiliary duties performed but does not include other occasional work which may be similar, related to, or logical assignment to the position.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Performs basic facilities maintenance tasks, including painting, lighting, plumbing, heating/cooling, and workstation assembly.

Maintains landscapes, turf, shrubs, trees, and flower beds. Trims trees and shrubs. Maintains and repairs picnic tables and other equipment. Maintains and repairs playground equipment.

Operates and maintains automatic and hand irrigation systems. Paints park equipment and buildings. Applies fertilizers and herbicides. Installs irrigation pipe and equipment.

Ability to perform light mechanical work and repairs on equipment. Performs corrective and preventative facilities maintenance.

Operates a motor vehicle regularly to attend to building maintenance and landscape needs.

Performs basic operational and safety checks on vehicles and maintains both interior and exterior cleanliness.

Operates in a competent, safe manner a wide variety of vehicles and equipment (such as frontend loaders, dump trucks, mowers, back hoes, etc.) required to perform duties in assigned area.

Performs outdoor clean-up tasks on City properties, including parks, bathrooms, and rights-of-way.

Performs snow & ice removal from facilities & parks sidewalks, parking lots, trails, etc.

Performs other duties as assigned within the public works department.

Auxiliary Functions:

Ability to learn specialized tasks including grave openings and closings. Deals with the public in a compassionate manner as needed before, during and after interment.

Assists other Public Works Divisions with tasks such as road repairs, lawn care, manhole repair, water meter reading, flag replacement, park irrigation, and snow removal. Perform, on a stand-by basis, maintenance at the City facilities and support structures.

JOB QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

Mandatory Requirements:

High school diploma, or GED equivalent, plus twelve (12) months verifiable work experience, which has provided specific knowledge in the area assigned; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which demonstrates the ability to perform the above-described duties. Woodworking experience and/or equipment operation related to the described duties of this position.

Knowledge of one or more of these areas:

The principles and practices associated with the repair, maintenance, and installation of irrigation and/or landscaping, facilities maintenance and/or construction. The systems, practices, methods, hazards, and safety precautions associated with materials, vehicles, equipment, and tools in area of assignment.

Ability to drive or operate vehicles, equipment, machines, and tools safely and in conformance with applicable laws, regulations, and work rules; detect needed repairs and make minor adjustments to equipment, machines or tools needed to perform duties; understand and carry out written and oral instructions; work independently in performance of regular assignments; establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, supervisors, and the public.

Special Requirements/Licenses:

The position requires employees to operate a motor vehicle in the course of their position. Possession of, or must obtain within thirty (30) days from date of hire, a valid Oregon drivers license.

Must have a safe driving record.

Desirable Requirements:

For desirable requirements to be considered, one must have met the minimum requirements noted above:

Eighteen (18) months verifiable work experience in facilities and/or park maintenance.

Twelve (12) months' verifiable work experience in City/County/State government.

Twelve (12) months verifiable experience in irrigation installation and design and/or landscaping; facilities maintenance and/or construction experience.

Possession of a current Basic First Aid/CPR Certification.

PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPTMENT:

PPE requirements as outlined in the position specific PPE Hazard Assessment Certification.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

An employee in this class may be assigned to any division within Public Works and is expected to perform duties independently or as part of a work crew often without direct supervision after assignment of duties. The employee generally works under the direct supervision of the Parks/Facilities Division Manager and /or the Parks Facilities Operations Supervisor. May be assigned to a Public Utilities Lead Worker or Worker III who gives instructions or specific objectives, and reviews work on specific projects for accuracy and adherence to standards.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Supervision is not a function of this position. Employee may assist in operational procedures to other employees.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The employee must occasionally team lift and/or move up to fifty (50) pounds and rarely team lift and/or move more than one hundred (100) pounds. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to reach with hands and arms. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, and use hands to handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls. The employee is occasionally required to sit, climb, or balance, stoop kneel, crouch, or crawl, and talk or hear.

TOOLS & EQUIPMENT USED:

Telephone system, mobile radio, cell phone; operates pickup/utility truck, 5/10-yard dump truck, wheel loader, and other City vehicles. Mechanical and manual spray equipment, chain/trimming saws, jackhammer, riding and manual mowers, backhoe, weed eaters, lawn edgers, and other landscaping equipment. Casket-lowering equipment and other required maintenance equipment.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts, in high and precarious places and is frequently exposed to outside weather conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to risk of electrical shock.

The noise level in the field environment is usually moderate, except during certain maintenance duties when noise levels may be loud.

Employees in this position are required to work in areas or around equipment which may meet or exceed the OSHA Hearing Conservation sound level. Employees in this position will participate in the City of Redmond Hearing Conservation Program.

May be required to work evenings, holidays, and weekends when necessary.
