Maintenance Superintendent II

The Maintenance Superintendent II is responsible for managing and coordinating all maintenance activities across a large facility or multiple units. This role provides leadership to maintenance supervisors, planners, and crafts personnel, ensuring safe, reliable, and efficient operation of plant equipment and infrastructure. The Maintenance Superintendent II typically handles more complex facilities or a broader scope than a Level I role.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Oversee day-to-day maintenance operations including mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, and utility systems.

  • Supervise maintenance supervisors, planners, and technicians; manage staffing levels, work assignments, and development plans.

  • Develop and manage preventive and predictive maintenance programs to maximize equipment reliability and minimize unplanned downtime.

  • Ensure all maintenance activities are performed in compliance with safety policies, regulatory requirements (e.g., OSHA, EPA), and company standards.

  • Review and approve maintenance plans, job packages, and work orders.

  • Coordinate with operations, engineering, and other departments to align maintenance priorities with production schedules.

  • Manage contractors and vendors supporting maintenance and turnaround work.

  • Monitor maintenance KPIs (e.g., equipment uptime, work order backlog, MTBF, cost control) and implement continuous improvement initiatives.

  • Support root cause failure analysis (RCFA), corrective actions, and equipment upgrades.

  • Participate in budget planning and control for maintenance labor, materials, and capital projects.

  • Ensure accurate documentation and timely data entry into CMMS (e.g., SAP, Maximo, Infor).

  • Lead or support planning and execution of shutdowns, turnarounds, and capital maintenance projects.

Qualifications:

Education/Experience:

  • Bachelors degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Industrial Engineering preferred; equivalent work experience acceptable.

  • 8+ years of progressive maintenance experience in a heavy industrial, refining, chemical, or manufacturing environment, including 3+ years in a leadership or superintendent role.

Certifications (Preferred):

  • OSHA 30 Certification

  • Maintenance Management Certification (e.g., CMRP)

  • CMMS or Reliability-centered Maintenance (RCM) training

Skills:

  • Strong leadership and team management abilities.

  • Advanced knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation systems.

  • Proficiency with maintenance planning tools and CMMS platforms.

  • Solid understanding of industrial safety, environmental regulations, and LOTO/permit-to-work systems.

  • Excellent communication, problem-solving, and project management skills.

Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to access and inspect equipment in confined spaces, elevated areas, and operating environments.

  • Must be available for call-outs, emergency responses, and extended hours during outages or turnarounds.
