The Opportunity

WSDOT is currently seeking a Highway Maintenance Worker 1, Rest Area Attendant to help ensure safe, clean, and fully operational rest areas for the traveling public. These facilities play a key role in reducing driver fatigue, enabling vehicle inspections, and supporting both private and commercial transportation. By maintaining these areas, you contribute directly to public safety and the efficient movement of people and goods across Washingtons highways. Safety is our top priority and is central to every task and decision in this role.

What to Expect

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, you/the Highway Maintenance Worker 1, Rest Area Attendant will:

  • Perform routine janitorial services to clean, scrub, and disinfect restrooms and public facilities.
  • Conduct daily water system monitoring, including chlorination, meter readings, and collecting water samples for testing.
  • Maintain and clean RV dump stations to ensure proper function and sanitary conditions.
  • Inspect and repair sidewalks and public access areas to eliminate trip or fall hazards.
  • Perform landscape maintenance, including mowing, trimming, and general groundskeeping.
  • Provide winter maintenance of walkways and entries using de-icing agents, shovels, and snow removal tools.
  • Operate hand and power tools to complete maintenance and repair tasks.
  • Perform minor facility repairs, such as replacing flush valves, faucet components, sensors, and light bulbs.

Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required :

  • Possession of an unrestricted valid drivers license to legally operate vehicles in Washington State.
  • Possession of a valid Traffic Control/Flagging card with experience performing traffic control per MUTCD including planning, setting signs and cones or barrels, and flagging, or obtain one within six (6) months of hire.
  • Obtain and maintain valid Fist Aid/CPR Certification.

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:

  • One (1) year experience performing landscaping activities such as mowing, pruning, and fertilizing.
  • One (1) year experience performing minor repair and maintenance of public buildings to include janitorial duties and plumbing/electrical systems.
  • Knowledge of a variety of cleaning agents and how to mix for effective cleaning.
  • Experience utilizing computer software such as Microsoft Office to include Excel, Work, Outlook, and tablets, such as an iPad.

  • The salary range listed includes the 3% general wage increase, effective on July 1, 2025.
  • In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position.
