Position Summary & Responsibilities
Position Summary:
This position will perform general maintenance functions along with overseeing Capital Improvement Projects for the Topeka Correctional Facility. The incumbent will provide training and supervision to an assigned resident work crew in the installation, maintenance, construction, repair and operation of the physical plant of the facility with emphasis in electrical systems, plumping systems and general maintenance & diagnostic services as it related to the Physical Plant of the facility. The supervisor assigns specific tasks to offenders and reviews their work to assure accurate and timely completion of projects. Also reviews blueprints and drawings and maintains inventories of all tools and equipment.
Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:
- Supervises and trains resident workers in the installation, maintenance, and repair of components of the physical plant within the Topeka Correctional Facility complex by using technical methods and both hand and power tools in order to teach resident workers the proper techniques for making repairs and/or improvements to anything located on the Topeka Correctional Facility complex.
- Assigns specific tasks to resident workers, constantly reviewing their work, to assure accurate and timely completion of projects. Reviews blueprints and drawings to ensure that projects are performed properly and in the most feasible and economic manner.
- Inventories all tools and equipment by visually inspecting and counting each tool or piece of equipment to ensure that tools and equipment are accurately accounted for upon completion of each shift or job; that they are kept clean and in good repair; and to prevent resident workers from taking unauthorized tools, equipment and uniforms to the living area.
- Keeps administration officials informed of any situation that develops during tour of duty by submitting reports on the work progress of the resident workers and/or on accidents, fire hazards or infractions of rules to assure the smooth and orderly operation of the facility.
- Provides for the safety of assigned resident workers by enforcing rules and regulations to ensure that they adhere to safety policies promulgated by the institution for their safety, health and protection.
- Inspects all projects by visually looking at or checking the project for proper installation to ensure quality of work performed and to ensure that work is installed in accordance with local and state electrical codes.
- Conducts inventory of construction materials by visually checking supplies and determining daily needs to ensure that ample supplies are kept on hand for normal maintenance of buildings and other related tasks. Placed requisition for materials using appropriate form, when supplies drop below the anticipated for conducting normal building maintenance and repair.
- Performs other assigned duties necessary to the operations of the Topeka Correctional Facility and the Kansas Department of Corrections.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
Five years of experience in the mechanical or building trades. Education may be substituted for experience as determined relevant by the agency.
Preferred Qualifications:
Minimum of three years' experience at the journeyman level in the building trades including at least one year of supervisory experience.
Post-Offer, Pre-employment Requirements:
- Must have a Valid High School Diploma or Equivalent.
- Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position.
- Must take and pass drug screen unless the incumbent is moving from one safety-sensitive position to another safety-sensitive position within the same agency, background check, and Tuberculosis (TB) test.
- Must be a current United States Citizen and possess a valid Driver's License.
- Must have an EPA approved CFC and general refrigerant reclamation certification.
