Job Description
The Kenosha Water Utility (KWU) provides municipal water and wastewater services to nearly 130,000 people in the greater Kenosha metropolitan area of southeastern Wisconsin, which is ideally located on Lake Michigan between Milwaukee and Chicago. The Kenosha Water Utility (under the City of Kenosha) offers a full benefits package which includes employer pension contribution (Wisconsin Retirement System), paid vacation/sick/holiday leave, health/dental/life insurance, compensatory time and overtime pay for emergency work outside of regular work day, tuition reimbursement, and other benefits.
The wage rates above reflect Step 1 and Step 17 of the 17-step compensation plan for this position. The person selected for this vacancy will likely be hired in at Step 1 unless the applicant has directly related experience and the required certification. Future pay increases are at 12-month intervals, although a yearly cost of living increase could also be approved.
Appointment to this position is subject to passing a minimum 6-month probationary period.
GENERAL OVERVIEW OF POSITION: Under general supervision of the Director of Water Production, this position performs a variety of manual labor tasks related to the maintenance and repair of the water production plant and associated facilities and equipment. This position may work in conjunction with Plant Operators, Electrical Repairers, Utility Mechanics, or other staff. Work is reviewed through observation and written reports for adherence to established policies and procedures. The regular work schedule is Monday-Friday first shift (currently 6:30AM to 2:30PM).
Example of Duties & ResponsibilitiesAssists with troubleshooting, repair and installation of mechanical equipment or parts.
Performs inspection and preventive maintenance on equipment.
Assists with cleaning sand filters and basins.
Performs sonic testing and pinning on membrane units.
Performs chlorine tank changes and assists with deliveries.
Assists with chemical deliveries.
Inspects, cleans and maintains tank sites, booster stations, and other related facilities.
Performs routine maintenance and cleaning of plant buildings.
Prepares and paints interior and exterior surfaces, pipes, and equipment.
Performs grounds-keeping and landscaping duties.
Operates Class D vehicles such as Utility van/truck, plow truck, forklift and skid loader. Operates and maintains a variety of hand/power tools and equipment related to job activities; performs minor tool repair.
Loads, transports and unloads materials and equipment;
Assures proper safety techniques and equipment are used to promote and ensure a safe job site. Maintains a safe, clean and orderly work area.
Maintains adequate inventory of routine maintenance parts and supplies.
Orders or purchases needed tools, parts or supplies from designated vendors.
Performs minor carpentry or plumbing work or repair.
Performs ice and snow removal activities.
Attends safety and other training as required.
Assists other Utility divisions with similar maintenance duties as needed.
Performs other related duties as required.

RequirementsRequired Education, Training & Experience :
Possession of a high school diploma, GED or equivalent.
A minimum of one (1) year of related maintenance experience.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Working knowledge of the tools, equipment, methods and practices used in plant maintenance and groundskeeping.
Basic knowledge of carpentry, plumbing and electrical repairs.
Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safe work practices associated with this position.
Ability to perform routine and semi-skilled activities related to the installation, maintenance and repair of water or wastewater treatment plant facilities and equipment.
Ability to operate motorized vehicles, hand tools and power equipment associated with this position in a safe and effective manner.
Ability to understand and effectively carry out oral and written instructions.
Ability to verbally communicate effectively.
Ability to work with minimal supervision.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, management and the general public.
Ability to handle reasonably necessary stress.
Physical Requirements:
Task may involve the regular, and at times sustained, performance of heavier physical tasks associated with plant and grounds maintenance.
Task may involve walking or standing on rough or uneven surfaces.
Task may involve bending, kneeling, crouching or stooping.
Task may involve the lifting, carrying or pushing of moderately heavy (20-50 pound) items and occasionally very heavy items (over 50 pounds).
Task may involve routine, complex or sustained operation of hand tools or powered (gasoline, electric, or diesel) machinery or equipment requiring the manipulation or adjustment of multiple controls.
Task may involve entering and working in confined spaces.
Task may involve ascending and descending stairs or ladders.
Environmental Requirements :
Ability to work under conditions that require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as inclement weather, temperature variations, odors, toxic agents, noise, vibrations, wetness, machinery, electrical currents, traffic hazards and/or dust.
