Major Duties of this position include:

Perform simple and routine maintenance and repair of grounds, exterior structures, buildings, equipment and reled utilities. Utilize a variety of merials, tools, and equipment associed with the repair and maintenance of such.

Assists with the maintenance and preservion of historic and non-historic structures. This position requires skills applied to the maintenance, stabilizion, restorion, repair and/or reconstruction of various historic and non-historic masonry and adobe structures.

Performs carpentry/woodworking tasks such as reconstruction, restoring or rehabiliting wood structures (rafters, doors, windows, trusses, beams, interior and exterior trim etc.).

Assist other higher-graded employees under general supervision in preservion work, general landscaping and grounds maintenance, basic carpentry, simple electrical installions or repairs, basic plumbing work, and painting interior and exterior surfaces, and perform a variety of janitorial services.

Operes a light truck to pick up supplies and to transport merials to and from work sites while assisting on project work.

Assists with the setup of complex scaffolding systems.

Performs simple and basic research of records pertaining to historic and/or prehistoric structures for the purpose of assessing their physical condition, style, preservion needs, and conservion work required.

Performs painting tasks which includes surface preparion and mixing of paints to approxime color and texture of historic paints and stains.

Working Conditions, e.g., outdoors, heavy lifting, etc.

The position requires working outdoors and indoors in all types of weher, and in temperure extremes from the low 30's to over 110 degrees F. Works in areas th are dusty, dirty, and greasy and is exposed to solvents, noxious gasses and fumes. Is exposed to venomous snakes and insects. Work requires frequent bending, stooping, walking, climbing and standing, and in cramped positions. Work requires lifting and moving heavy items up to 50 pounds, use of ladders, and is subject to falls, cuts, bruises and electrical shocks.

Incumbent of this position required to wear a uniform. Tour of duty may include weekends and holidays; daily schedules vary between 6:00 a.m. and 5:00p.m.

Area Informion:

Casa Grande Ruins Nional Monument is conveniently loced halfway between Phoenix and Tucson in the friendly city of Coolidge, Arizona. Shopping/medical are available in Coolidge one (1) mile from park headquarters. Full range of shopping, medical, dental and recreional facilities available in Casa Grande (18 mi.), Phoenix area (50 mi.) and Tucson (60 mi.). Kindergarten through senior high school available in Coolidge. Day care is available in Coolidge. A college is loced between Coolidge and Casa Grande, 10 mi. from Coolidge. In addition, there are several other points of interest within a 35-mile radius of Coolidge such as Picacho Peak Ste Park, the Historic Town of Florence, Boyce Thompson Southwestern Arboretum, Lost Dutchman Ste Park in the Superstition Mountains and Huhugam Heritage Center. No government quarters available.

Physical Demands: The physical effort required is considered heavy to modere and requires lifting or handling of objects or merials up to 50 pounds unassisted, and occasionally lifting or moving heavier items with the assistance of a lifting device or other workers. The incumbent is required to work while standing, stooping, bending, crouching and climbing in tiring, awkward, and uncomfortable positions, and in all manners of environmental conditions. When working from a ladder or scaffolds, work involves reaching overhead, stretching or other awkward positions. Occasionally work is performed beneh buildings where the work area is cramped and dark, or work may be done from highly eleved plforms. Sometimes long hikes while carrying a backpack may be essential as is the possibility of technical climbing into some sites.

Working Conditions: General work Is done prehistoric and historic structures and ruins throughout the park. Often these are in backcountry locions with difficult access th may require rappelling and the use of scaffold and ladder systems. The structures and ruins may be extremely deteriored and structurally unsound, and therefore considered hazardous. The work is often extremely dusty and direct and of such nure th protective equipment and clothing such as hard hs, safety shoes, goggles, respirors, and ear protection are required, whether working indoors and outdoors. Some work is performed in the shop area where incumbent is exposed to modere or high noise levels from opering machinery, saw dust in the air, fumes, and hazards associed with power equipment or preservives. Occasionally the work may be performed outside under adverse weher conditions. Other environmental factors such as stinging and biting insects, snakes, and poisonous plants can be encountered. Assignments could involve working with hazardous merials, such as rodent nests, asbestos, and lead-based products, etc. To reduce the dangers, the incumbent is required to follow prescribed safe practices.
