The Temporary Parks & Recreation Maintenance Worker I/II is a temporary employee of the City, working in the Parks & Recreation Department during the summer maintenance season (between May and October). The Maintenance Worker performs manual labor to maintain the City's public parks, grounds, athletic fields, and related building facilities. The employee also performs work on specialized projects and occasional tasks to support the work of other departments (e.g., directing traffic in parking lots and collecting fees in a ticket booth).

  • This position will be scheduled to work through October 11, 2025.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Perform a variety of horticultural activities, including turf maintenance, bed preparation, planting, transplanting, watering, weeding, cultivating, mulching, pruning, mowing, and maintenance of trees, shrubs, annuals and perennials according to standard horticultural practices.
  • Perform general maintenance, repairs, and upkeep to parks and recreation facilities and equipment; install and maintain underground irrigation systems; remove sand, litter, and debris; pick up recyclable material on a routine schedule.
  • Safely operate and maintain small equipment, including but not limited to hand tools, power tools, gas-powered mowers, hand mowers, trimmers, drills, gas-powered leaf blowers, shovels, and small trucks.
  • Safely handle and maintain chemicals, vehicles, tools, and equipment in accordance with manufacturer's instructions and best practices, using protective equipment provided.
  • Coordinate, communicate effectively and work cooperatively with other City Departments, employees, City contractors, and the general public, including informing superiors of issues such as broken equipment, vandalism, and potential safety hazards.
  • Set up facilities for City functions and other special events. This work requires moving tables, chairs, traffic cones, etcetera.
  • Perform tasks with minimal or no supervision.
  • Attend Department training programs.
  • Have regular, reliable, and predictable attendance at work.
  • Perform other work as assigned.
  • Temporary Parks and Recreation Maintenance Worker II: In addition to the duties above, the Temporary Parks and Recreation Maintenance Worker II must safely operate and maintain large equipment such as tractors and large trucks.
  • Temporary Parks and Recreation Maintenance Worker I: Be at least seventeen (17) years of age and possess a valid work permit issued by the Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development.
  • Temporary Parks and Recreation Maintenance Worker II: Be at least eighteen (18) years of age and possess a valid Alaska driver's license. The employee after hire will be required to submit a Division of Motor Vehicles record upon request and prior to operating a City vehicle.
  • Possess any combination of training and experience that provides the applicant with the knowledge, skill, and ability to perform the essential job functions.
  • Must be available to work varying schedules, including weekends, City holidays, and occasional shift extensions. The schedule will vary seasonally based upon a 40-hour workweek, with the expectation that the employee will work weekends and after traditional City business hours.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience in the safe operation of landscape and construction tools and equipment.
  • Experience in the methods and techniques of performing grounds maintenance and repairs, including but not limited to athletic fields, landscape structures, irrigation systems, turf, and trails.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT The work environment is typically out of doors where the employee must do work that is sometimes strenuous in all kinds of weather (e.g., high or low temperatures, fog, direct sunlight, wind) and in dirt and dust. Work is to be performed at, above, or below floor or ground level. Some work is performed indoors in spaces that are adequately heated and lighted. Noise from mowers, large equipment, and other equipment is frequent. Personal protective equipment is provided and must be used in accordance with best practices, federal and state laws, and City/Department policies and operating procedures.

Temporary Parks and Recreation Maintenance Worker II: The employee often handles unsanitary material and performs hazardous operations requiring personal protective equipment. The employee is required to drive a vehicle.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS This position requires a moderate level of physical ability, including vision, hearing, speaking, flexibility, and strength. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to climb ladders and stairs; is required to perform general duties that may include, but not be limited to, walking, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, pushing, pulling, reaching, dragging, and carrying; is required to use hands and fingers dexterously to operate power equipment and gardening implements (including power mowers, weed trimmers, shovels, rakes, etc.); is required to exert (often lifting) up to 50 pounds of force frequently and in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally. The employee will be regularly required to stand and walk for extended periods of time and work in bent/hunched positions on the ground. Specific vision requirements include close, distance, color, and peripheral vision, the ability to adjust focus, and the ability to judge distances and spatial relationships. The employee must be able to hear and to talk and communicate verbally in person.

Temporary Parks and Recreation Maintenance Worker II: The employee is required to use hands and fingers dexterously to operate and maintain large equipment such as tractors and large trucks.
