The Metropolitan Airports Commission is accepting applications to fill multiple Seasonal Airport Maintenance Worker positions. These positions are benefitted and scheduled for 40 hours per week.

As a Seasonal Airport Maintenance Worker, you will team up with our award-winning Field Maintenance crew to ensure MSP winter operations run smoothly! The primary responsibility of a Seasonal Airport Maintenance Worker is to maintain the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport's airfields, grounds, and roadway maintenance functions. This includes snow and ice control on the airfield and on public areas such as roadways and terminal areas of the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. In addition, this position performs grounds keeping, concrete and asphalt pavement repairs, truck driving, mowing, weeding, fence installation and repair, garbage removal and general cleanup of the airfield and public areas of the airport.

  • $28.463/hour

Pay Differentials/Incentives

  • +$0.60/hour for Class A CDL -or- +$0.40/hour for Forklift Certification
  • +$1.25/hour for 2nd Shift
  • +$2.00/hour for 3rd Shift

Summary of Duties

Primarily performs maintenance duties to FAA standards, which include skilled and semi-skilled level work required to maintain the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport's airfields, grounds, and roadway maintenance functions. The work may be in close proximity of aircraft operations. Typical work includes snow and ice control on airfield and in public areas such as roadways and terminal areas. Performs grounds keeping, concrete and asphalt pavement repairs, truck driving, mowing, weeding, fence installation and repair, garbage removal and general cleanup of the airfield and public areas of the airport.

Snow and Ice Removal

  • Function as an equipment operator performing snow and ice removal using specialized snow removal equipment; i.e., multi-function equipment (MFE), runway snow blowers, runway plows and brooms, ramp push plows, tractors, sanders, liquid chemical dispensing vehicles and snow hauling vehicles.
  • Perform manual snow removal operations duties.

Landscaping/Grounds Keeping

  • Perform skilled level work in a variety of landscaping grounds keeping duties including landscaping and turf management, grading and rut/depression filling, and application of weed control chemicals.
  • Plant, cut, and trim trees, shrubs and flowering plants; install ornamental landscaping fixtures.
  • Safely operate diesel-powered tractors with mower attachments, small tractors, riding mowers and other powered landscaping equipment.

Bituminous and Concrete Repair

  • Perform bituminous and concrete repairs on runways, taxiways, aircraft aprons, parking ramps, parking lots, sidewalks, roadways and other public areas.
  • Perform joint seal repairs including sawing, routing and installation of hot-application joint seal material.
  • Pour concrete for repair of sewers, drains, catch basins and larger concrete repairs.
  • Perform brick or block work as needed.
  • Provide traffic control at work sites.

Fence, Sign and Gate Construction and Maintenance

  • Install, assemble, cut and repair chain-link fence, barbed wire and sliding gate sections, both manual and electric type.
  • Install, repair and replace signage, signposts and other support structures.

General Airport Cleaning

  • Perform general cleaning of runways, taxiways, aircraft parking aprons, parking lots, roadways.
  • Safely operate power sweepers, backpack blowers, power washers, vacuums and other equipment.

Environmental Duties

  • Perform rubbish and trash removal, including manual collection as required.
  • Empty trash receptacles and transfer debris to dumpsters or disposal sites as directed.
  • Perform inspections of drainage systems and check operation of storm water control equipment.
  • Install and replace absorbent collection devices at appropriate locations.
  • Assist in containing and recovering fuel spills, oil spills and other pollutants on airport surfaces or near airport rivers, lakes, streams and catch basins.

General Duties

  • Operate mobile and base-station radio equipment; maintain contact with airport tower while performing airfield duties according to Federal Aviation Administration regulations and Airport Operations Area movement area procedures.
  • Train co-workers on the safe and proper use of equipment.
  • Assist trades, contract, and other personnel as directed.
  • Assist in equipment maintenance, cleaning and care.
  • May assist with parts pick-up and delivery.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Possession of a Class A -OR- Class B Commercial Driver's license permit and the ability to obtain a Class A or B Commercial Driver's license (CDL) with airbrake endorsement within six (6) months of employment
  • Satisfactory driving record (see definition under 'Other Information')
  • Ability to perform physical labor for extended periods including shoveling, carrying, etc.
  • Ability to lift, carry, and position up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to work outdoors under severe and varying weather conditions for extended periods of time
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively
  • Ability to pass a criminal history and employment background check
  • Ability to pass a physical examination

DESIRABLE REQUIREMENTS

  • Possession of a valid state issued Class A commercial driver's license (CDL) with airbrake endorsement
  • Previous field maintenance experience at MSP or another airport
  • Two years of work experience operating commercial-rated vehicles, heavy equipment, and/or large agricultural machinery
  • Previous work experience in snow removal operations using a variety of snow removal equipment
  • Previous work experience in pavement maintenance, including concrete, masonry, and asphalt
  • Previous work experience in landscaping or parks maintenance
  • Previous work experience in commercial property maintenance
  • Experience with chemical applications related to grounds keeping
  • Experience in the use of two-way radio equipment

Motor Vehicle Record Evaluation Guideline

Safe driving habits are critical for individuals employed in MAC occupations that require extensive driving of equipment on the aircraft operating area. As a result, external applicants for the Airport Maintenance Worker position must meet the MAC's standard of safe driving in order to be hired.

A contingent offer of employment shall be withdrawn if the motor vehicle record contains:

1. Three (3) or more minor moving violations within the last three (3) years from date of offer. Minor violations include, but not limited to:

  • Failure to wear a seat belt
  • Speeding
  • Failure to stop at a stop sign
  • Failure to yield
  1. Any major violation within the past three (3) years from date of offer including, but not limited to:
  • Driving under influence of alcohol/drugs
  • Open bottle or allowing open bottle
  • Failure to stop/report an accident
  • Violations as a result of an accident
  • Reckless driving/speeding contest
  • Making a false accident report
  • Homicide, manslaughter or assault arising out of the use of a vehicle
  • Driving while license is suspended/revoked
  • Careless driving
  • Attempting to elude a police officer
  • Excessive speed

Any pending criminal matter for a serious traffic offense will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

Felony: A crime for which a sentence of imprisonment for more than one year and a fine of more than $3,000 may be imposed. (Examples: criminal vehicular operations resulting in injury or death, fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle resulting in an injury or death.)

Gross Misdemeanor: Any crime which is not a felony or misdemeanor, the maximum fine for which is $3,000.00, and imprisonment for up to one year. (Examples: fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle, subsequent DWI violations within five and ten years.)

Misdemeanor: A crime for which a sentence of not more than 90 days or a fine of $1,000.00, or both, may be imposed. (Examples: Driving Under the Influence (DUI), Driving After Suspension/Driving After Revocation (DAS/DAR), reckless/careless driving, no insurance, open bottle, parking in a handicapped area, third moving violation in a year, petty misdemeanor violations with enhancements.)

Petty Misdemeanor: A petty offense which is prohibited by statute, which does not constitute a crime, for which a fine of not more than $100.00 may be imposed, unless the violation was originally a misdemeanor, whereupon the fine may not exceed $200.00. (Examples: speeding, failing to stop at a stop sign, failure to yield.)
