JOB SUMMARY: The person employed in this capacity will perform his/her duties under the direction of the Director of the City Garage. Performs semi-skilled, and administrative work in maintaining the vehicles and mechanical equipment for the City of Jackson.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

• Provide preventive maintenance for all vehicles and mechanical equipment.
• Operate a variety of diagnostic instruments and a variety of hand, electric, and air-driven tools.
• Test, service and repair vehicles and mechanical equipment.
• Inspect, adjust and replace necessary units and related parts in the performance of repair and maintenance work.
• Repair brakes, engines, electrical, fuel and hydraulic transmissions, ignitions, air, exhaust, axle assemblies and related systems.
• Change and repair tires and tubes.
• Evaluate status of mechanical equipment and vehicles, and perform needed repairs.
• Conduct various analyses and inspections of vehicles and mechanical systems to determine the most cost-effective maintenance, repair or replacement.
• Provide emergency field assistance to disabled equipment as needed and appropriate.
• Must be able to perform clerical duties using Excel and Microsoft Word.
• Perform all other duties as may be assigned by supervisor.

TOOLS/EQUIPMENT:

• Motorized vehicles for mechanical testing purposes, power and hand tools and equipment for vehicle and mechanical system work; mechanic's tools including jacks, hydraulic lifts, air tools, and other tools required for minor repairs and routine maintenance of motorized vehicles; electronic vehicles diagnostic equipment; personal computer, calculator, phone; mobile or portable radio.

REQUIRED EDUCATION, DEGREES, CERTIFICATES, AND/OR LICENSE:

• High School Diploma or GED equivalent plus specialized training in mechanics, maintenance management, or a closely related field.
• Three (3) years of related experience, or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Valid Driver's License.

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

• Thorough knowledge of automotive mechanics; considerable knowledge of gas and diesel engines, transmissions, hydraulics, pumps, valves and generators; working

knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions common to municipal maintenance and repair activities. Working knowledge of the practices, methods, materials and tools used in modern equipment maintenance.

• Skill in operation of listed tools and equipment.
