The City of Valdez Parks Maintenance Department is hiring a .6 Seasonal Permanent Part-Time Parks & Trails Maintenance Technician. This position works an approximate 7 month season, beginning in May and ending in November annually.

Under supervision of the Parks Maintenance Supervisor, or designee, this position is responsible for providing maintenance for all City of Valdez parks and trails. Work varies between park facilities and trails.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:
  • Must have ability to lift up to 50 pounds frequently.
  • Must be able to walk/stand for long periods of time, walking up to 7 miles in a day on trails with a full pack.
  • Must have ability to work in outdoor conditions, to include: sun, rain, ice, snow, wind and marine environment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Must be 18 years of age or older at time of employment.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Must have valid AK drivers license.
    • Must undergo 5 year driving history review.
  • First Aid CPR card within the first 3 months of employment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS : (Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following tasks, knowledge, skills and other characteristics. PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Monitors and performs routine maintenance on all park and trails areas such as playgrounds, ball fields and courts, trails, park landscapes and buildings.
  • Trains new employees on work safety, OSHA requirements and general job tasks.
  • Performs carpentry, fence work, cement work and small engines maintenance on a semi-frequent basis.
  • Operates all department heavy and light equipment and power tools, with the exception of the snow groomer.
  • Responsible for P&R department vehicle and equipment fleet general maintenance checks.
  • Works cooperatively with other departments, external agencies and the public for event and activity site preparation and logistics in parks and trails.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND OTHER CHARACTERISTICS:
  • Must have knowledge of parks facilities operations and maintenance plans.
  • Must have knowledge and experience in driving, loading and securing large loads on trailers.
  • Experience in parks infrastructure repairs including carpentry, masonry, small engines, and fencing.
  • Working knowledge of trails construction, and trail maintenance standards.
  • Working knowledge of hand and power tools.
  • Ability to read technical specifications and blueprints.
  • Must have the ability to work independently.
  • Must have computer skills in Outlook, Word and Excel and the ability to learn new programs.
  • Must have leadership skills allowing performance as on-site leader in the absence of the Maintenance Supervisor or crew leader.
