NEW Solutions connects experienced workers (ages 55+) with the USDA AgriculturalResearch Service (ARS). These experienced professionals provide administrative,scientific, and technical support to the Agricultural Research Service throughthe Experienced Worker Program (EWP).

Qualifications:
Minimum of 10 year(s) of experience in industrial machinery maintenance,fabrication, and installation; facilities maintenance; and scientific sample anddata collection. OR HS/GED Degree
Skill in operating shop tools, such as drill presses, band saws, grinders,hand-powered tools, hand tools, stick and MIG welders, and cutting torches.Ability to operate a forklift. Knowledge of proper and safe operating proceduresfor each cotton gin machinery sequence.Duties:
Fabricates and installs both conventional and experimental equipment andcomponent parts from completed drawings. Performs maintenance and repair ofresearch and laboratory equipment and facilities, including structural,cosmetic, and mechanical systems. Provides support, assists technicians and shoppersonnel, for ginning research projects and unit operation. Collects and weighssamples and records data as required by the test. The enrollee shall not signfederal documents, authorize the use of federal funds, nor initiate or conductfederally funded research projects. The enrollee shall not author articles forpublication as a federal employee, nor coordinate scientific research betweenthe Government and private industry. The enrollee shall not present themselvesas a Government employee or Government representative at meetings both foreignand domestic or when coordinating federal agencies? areas of research. Other:Health and Safety Considerations: Most work is performed inside heated andventilated shop and laboratory areas. Work is exposed to noise, dirt, dust,cotton lint, and drafts, and to physical hazards from powered tools andmachinery, metal chips, snags, and welding and cutting equipment. Occasionaloutside work may be subject to dust or prevailing weather conditions.Required Safety Gear: Some tasks require wearing personal protectiveequipment, such as welding helmets, aprons, safety glasses, dust masks, earprotection, and hard hats. Safety rules and protocols must be observed. Theenrollee will be informed of safety rules and protocols by the Primary Monitor,and the enrollee will participate in regular safety training with Laboratorystaff.Physical requirements: Work requires stooping, bending, reaching, crawlingon machines, climbing ladders and platforms, and working from a prone positionwhile operating and adjusting various machines. The work frequently requireswalking or standing for prolonged periods and lifting, pushing, and pullingloads that occasionally exceed 50 pounds in weight.
