Heat Mechanic (Boiler Operator) Job Description The Heat Mechanic installs, maintains, and repairs a wide range of heating systems and related mechanical equipment in various sized buildings. This role focuses on inspecting and testing controls and systems to diagnose malfunctions, performing boiler and furnace maintenance, servicing pumps and compressors, and supporting overall HVAC operations in collaboration with refrigeration mechanics. The Heat Mechanic also participates in training apprentices and contributes to general building maintenance to ensure safe, efficient, and reliable operation of heating and steam systems. Responsibilities Inspect and test controls and systems to detect and locate malfunctions in heating and related equipment. Replace, repair, rebuild, and adjust valves, piping, steam traps, steam pipes, air dryers and compressors, convectors, and humidifiers. Install and repair thermostats and sensors to ensure accurate temperature control and system performance. Replace, repair, and clean convectors and balance system air flow for optimal comfort and efficiency. Maintain and repair boilers and furnaces in various sized buildings, ensuring safe and reliable operation. Check water levels in steam and hot water boilers, including monitoring and maintaining water treatment systems. Service, repair, and rebuild pumps and compressors associated with heating and steam systems. Check gas and air pressure in boilers and furnaces and make necessary adjustments. Change out and repair blowers and clean boilers to maintain efficient operation. Troubleshoot boilers and related systems to identify issues and implement effective solutions. Rod out and clean heat exchangers and tube bundles to maintain proper heat transfer and system performance. Wire controls, thermostats, and motors, and install pressure and temperature controls as needed. Service forced air furnaces and ensure they operate safely and efficiently. Work as part of a team with refrigeration mechanics to maintain, service, and repair HVAC equipment. Perform other general building maintenance tasks as needed to support facility operations. Participate in the training of apprentices and other workers by sharing technical knowledge and best practices. Drive a vehicle as needed to travel between work sites or transport tools and equipment. Adhere to all safety procedures and guidelines while operating machinery, tools, and controls and while working in elevated or confined spaces. Essential Skills 5 years of verifiable journey-level experience in the heat field such as Boiler Operator, Stationary Engineer, or Steam Plant Operator. Strong mechanical aptitude with hands-on experience in service, troubleshooting, and repair of heating systems. Proficiency in boiler repair, boiler maintenance, and boiler operation in a plant or building environment. Experience working with control systems, including installing, wiring, and troubleshooting controls, thermostats, and motors. Ability to inspect and test controls and systems to accurately detect and locate malfunctions. Demonstrated experience with pumps, compressors, blowers, convectors, steam traps, steam pipes, and related steam equipment. Knowledge of power plant or plant equipment operation, including steam and hot water systems. Ability to perform preventive maintenance on boilers, chillers, and associated equipment. Capability to work effectively as part of a team with refrigeration mechanics on HVAC equipment. Valid ability to drive a vehicle as needed for work-related tasks. Additional Skills & Qualifications Boiler and steam-related certifications (preferred). Boilers license or Stationary Engineer credentials (preferred). Experience with chiller systems and broader HVAC plant equipment. Familiarity with power plant operation and steam plant procedures. Ability to train apprentices and other workers by demonstrating proper techniques and safety practices. Strong communication skills to coordinate with team members and report issues clearly. Work Environment This is a full-time role with a regular schedule of Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with the expectation of rotating on-call coverage as needed.
