SY 26-27 Director, Maintenance Trades

PRIMARY FUNCTION : This position is responsible for providing strategic and operational leadership for all districtwide skilled trades, including mechanical (HVAC), plumbing, electrical, roofing, carpentry, flooring, hardware, and building envelope systems. This role is responsible for supervising Trade Supervisors, ensuring the consistent execution of maintenance strategies, and delivering high-quality, timely, and safe services across all district facilities. Serving as the critical link between strategic direction and field execution, the Director ensures preventive maintenance, repairs, and system improvements are completed efficiently, in alignment with district standards, and in support of uninterrupted school operations.

REQUIREMENTS:

Education and Experience

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or a related field; or a high school diploma and a minimum of ten (10) years of progressively responsible experience in facilities maintenance or trades operations
  • At least five (5) years of demonstrated supervisory or leadership experience, with a proven ability to lead teams and manage operations effectively.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of supervisory or leadership experience, with demonstrated success managing teams and operations
  • Proven experience working across multiple trade disciplines (i.e. HVAC, Electrical, Plumbing)

Preferred:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or a related field; or a minimum of ten (10) years of progressively responsible experience in facilities maintenance or trades operations

Licenses, Certifications, and other Requirements

Required:

  • Must maintain valid drivers’ license and reliable personal transportation.
  • Eligible for Georgia Professional Standards Support Certificate.

Duties and Responsibilities

Trades Operations Leadership

  • Directly supervises Trade Supervisors across multiple disciplines, including Mechanical, Plumbing, Electrical, Roofing, Carpentry, Flooring, and Hardware
  • Oversees coordination, scheduling, and execution of associated trades
  • Optimizes workload distribution and resource allocation to ensure efficiency and responsiveness
  • Champions quality control and continuous improvement across all trades functions

Maintenance Execution & Service Delivery

  • Leads daily maintenance operations, including preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance
  • Ensures timely response to work orders, service requests, and emergency issues impacting school and site operations
  • Establishes clear performance expectations and accountability measures for all trade teams

Standards Implementation

  • Ensures consistency in workmanship, materials, and repair practices across all trades
  • Conducts routine field inspections to verify quality, safety, and compliance with district standards
  • Implements best practices to improve reliability and longevity of building systems

Workforce Management & Development

  • Provides leadership, coaching, and performance management for Trade Supervisors
  • Supports recruitment, onboarding, and retention of skilled trades personnel
  • Identifies training needs and ensures staff are properly trained and certified

Safety & Compliance

  • Ensures adherence to all safety protocols, regulatory requirements, and district policies
  • Promotes a proactive culture of safety across all trades and job sites
  • Supports compliance efforts related to inspections, audits, and risk mitigation

Coordination & Communication

  • Partners with Maintenance Operations leadership to align trades work with district service priorities
  • Collaborates with Capital Programs on project coordination, system upgrades, and major repairs
  • Maintains clear and proactive communication with school and site leadership regarding schedules, impacts, and service expectations

Vendor & Contractor Coordination

  • Assists in the management of external contractors supporting trades work
  • Ensures vendor performance meets district expectations for quality, safety, and timeliness

Terms of Employment

Savannah-Chatham County Public School System has the right to revise this job description at any time

and it does not in any way represent a contract of employment. Incumbents will be considered “at will” and appropriate pay will be determined based on the assigned pay grade and allowable experience.

  1. This position is “essential personnel, critical staff” when there is an event that creates security

challenges or disruptions to district operations. This position may be required to work during identified

periods of an emergency as defined in Policy Regulation GBRB-R, Title: Professional Personnel Time

Schedules.

Work Environment

Employees in this classification are normally exposed to a typical office environment. The employee has

some control over the length of time sitting, standing, or ambulating. There are occasions that require the

lifting or pulling of equipment or supplies, as well as bending, stooping, or stretching. There is frequent use of computers, telephones, and other standard office equipment, which includes reading, listening, writing, or speaking. There are few exceptional physical or sensory demands.
