The Opportunity

WSDOT is seeking a motivated and safety-focused Highway Maintenance Worker 2 to join our Traffic Striping Crew based in Union Gap, WA. In this dynamic role, you will travel throughout the South-Central Region, performing pavement marking and traffic striping operations that directly contribute to the safety and mobility of Washington's transportation system. As part of a dedicated team, you will help install and maintain roadway markings, prepare road surfaces, and support the delivery of high-quality, durable, and compliant pavement markings that enhance visibility for motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians. This position offers the opportunity to work outdoors, operate specialized equipment, and play a vital role in ensuring projects are completed safely, efficiently, and on schedule.

What to Expect

Work is generally performed MondayThursday on four 10-hour shifts; however, weekends, holidays, night work, and extended hours may be required for emergency response and non-scheduled callouts. The position requires the ability to report to the duty station within 45 minutes, respond in all weather conditions, and participate in rotational night, standby, and call-back assignments.

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Highway Maintenance Worker 2 will:

  • Perform, implement, and maintain traffic striping and pavement marking operations for all South-Central Region (SCR) work activities.
  • Conduct surface preparation, layout, application, and removal of pavement markings for lane lines, edge lines, crosswalks, symbols, legends, stop bars, and other roadway delineation on two-lane and multi-lane highways.
  • Operate and maintain striping equipment and vehicles, including paint and thermoplastic application systems, pre-marking equipment, grinders, bead dispensers, and support trucks to ensure accurate, durable, and compliant markings.
  • Operate 54,000-pound GVW snowplow and deicing vehicles to clear snow and ice from state highways, ramps, shoulders, maintenance facilities, and designated material stockpile sites.
  • Apply solid and liquid deicing and anti-icing materials, including salt, sand, and chemical treatments, using calibrated spreader and application systems to maintain safe roadway conditions.
  • Conduct material blending operations at stockpile sites.
  • Perform routine asphalt and concrete repairs, including pothole patching, crack sealing, and surface leveling.
  • Assist with the inspection, repair, and installation of guardrails, barriers, and traffic safety devices.
  • Inspect, clean, and repair drainage systems, such as culverts, catch basins, and stormwater inlets.
  • Perform physically demanding tasks, such as setting up and removing traffic control devices (cones, signs, barricades), flagging traffic, and operating vehicles and equipment like snowplows and attenuator trucks.
  • Transport, move, and manipulate various types of equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.

Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity, the following competencies are required :

  • Highway and Roadway Maintenance Expertise: Demonstrated experience performing routine and emergency maintenance on highways, roadways, and related infrastructure including pavement repair, drainage systems, erosion control, vegetation management, sign and guardrail installation, and debris removal. Ability to assess maintenance needs and perform repairs to highway structures, roadside features, and landscapes.
  • Heavy Equipment Operations: Skilled in operating and maintaining heavy equipment (e.g. front-end loaders, tractor mowers, sweepers, flushers, truck-mounted attenuators, backhoe, Vactor, 26,000 -56,000 GVW Dump truck with snowplow and chemical deicer attachments)
  • Safety Awareness & Compliance: Strong understanding of workplace safety procedures and commitment to following safety policies, including confined space entry, fall protection, and hazardous material handling. Ability to participate in the creation and implementation of Pre Activity Safety Plans (PASP) and attend regular safety training.
  • Technical & Administrative Proficiency: Ability to use electronic systems for timekeeping, maintenance tracking, inventory management, and cost estimating. Proficient in standard computer applications including Microsoft Office and email communication.

In addition to the above, the following are also required :

  • Possession of a valid Class A Commercial Drivers License (CDL) with N endorsement without airbrake restriction.
  • Valid CDL Medical card.
  • Washington State Flagging Card (or ability to obtain within six (6) months of appointment).
  • First Aid Certification (or ability to obtain within six (6) months of appointment).

It is preferred that qualified candidates also demonstrate:

  • Traffic Control and Roadway Safety: Demonstrates the ability to safely implement and maintain traffic control measures in accordance with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), ensuring the protection of workers, motorists, and the traveling public.
  • Maintenance Procedures and Operational Compliance: Ability to interpret, understand, and apply maintenance manuals, policies, procedures, and operational guidance to support safe, effective, and compliant maintenance activities.
  • Winter Operations and Emergency Response: Demonstrates knowledge of snow and ice control principles and the ability to interpret and implement winter operations plans, procedures, and response strategies to maintain roadway safety during adverse weather conditions.
  • Work Zone Traffic Control: Ability to interpret and apply work zone traffic control standards, guidelines, and best practices, including MUTCD requirements, to establish and maintain safe and effective work zones for roadway maintenance and construction activities.
