Position Summary

The Maintenance Technician shall perform the duties as specified in conformity with policies as specified by the Alabama Community College System Board of Trustees, Federal and State Regulations, and the Drake State Community & Technical College Faculty and Staff Handbook.

Salary: Appropriate placement on the Alabama Community College System Board of Trustees

Salary Schedule: E4, Grade 04

Salary Range: $39,759-57251 (12 months, Non-Exempt)

Salary step placement is based on experience per Drake State's practice for awarding salary step credits.

Work Hours: 8:00 am - 5:30 pm Monday - Thursday and 8:00 am 12:00 pm on Friday

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The Maintenance Technician shall perform the duties as specified in conformity with policies established by the Alabama Community College System Board of Trustees and the J.F. Drake State Community and Technical College Faculty and Staff Handbook.

  • Ensure Safety Data Sheets are reviewed for every chemical that is used on the campus and that transfer containers are properly labeled
  • Assist with the maintenance and upkeep with the College's vehicle fleet
  • Provide general maintenance to the buildings and grounds, to include replacing bulbs and ballasts, replacing ceiling tiles and grids, repair doors and replace locks, base molding, installing and repairing drywall, and painting interior and exterior of buildings, repair broken window glass, installing flooring
  • Repair and/or replace electrical outlets, light switches, light fixtures, and other components
  • Install and repair or replace mixing valves and plumbing fixtures such as sinks, toilets, urinals, water fountains, water heaters, faucets and flush valves, and other parts and appliances; clean blocked drains
  • Lubricate bearings on HVAC equipment, change filters in air handlers and provide routine checks on HVAC equipment
  • Assist in all moving and storage operations of physical plant equipment and supplies
  • Assemble classroom and office equipment and furniture
  • Perform general custodial functions to include washing windows, mopping, stripping, buffing, and waxing floors; pays particular attention to the cleanliness and sanitation of all restrooms in assigned work areas as well as entrances and areas surrounding the buildings
  • Report to supervisor, any item in need of repair and corrects or reports safety hazards
  • Knowledge of the proper use of cleaning supplies
  • Operate shop vehicles and equipment/machinery such as forklift, buffers, floor scrubbers, and vacuum cleaners, scissor lifts etc.
  • Assist in moving equipment and furniture
  • Keep warehouse storage orderly
  • Use common hand tools
  • Assist in setting up tables, chairs, and needed equipment for special events and activities
  • Observe safety regulations, uniform code, and all college policies
  • Perform general housekeeping/buildings/grounds duties as assigned
  • Process maintenance requests as assigned
  • Retain and submit documentation as requested to support accreditation efforts
  • Perform other work related responsibilities as assigned by the Lead Maintenance Worker, Director of Operations and/or the President

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum of a high school diploma or GED credentials
  • Minimum of one (1) year of full-time related work experience in general maintenance
  • Valid State Driver's License. Must be insurable by the College's insurance carrier
  • Experience in electrical, carpentry, equipment operation, and/or plumbing
  • Ability to independently operate machinery
  • Ability to independently prioritize and perform all work in accordance with OSHA, state, and municipal requirements
  • Ability to independently perform preventive maintenance on real property installed equipment
  • Ability to project a professional and congenial demeanor
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to stand/walk/lift/stoop/bend for prolonged period of time

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Valid CDL Class B or Class C License with Passenger (P) endorsement
  • Experience in custodial duties
  • Knowledge of Occupational Safety and Health Act and Hazardous Communications program regarding worker safety and the use of chemicals
