Maintenance Technician Job Description The Maintenance Technician supports reliable production operations by performing preventive and corrective maintenance on a wide range of industrial equipment in a cold food-processing environment. This role combines mechanical, electrical, and welding skills to troubleshoot issues, complete repairs, and document all work in a computerized maintenance management system. The technician works closely with operations and other technical staff to ensure equipment runs safely, efficiently, and in compliance with established maintenance practices. Responsibilities Perform preventive maintenance (PM) on assigned equipment and maintain organized, consistent maintenance practices. Complete operational maintenance tasks on equipment as assigned and ensure all work aligns with maintenance standards. Enter all maintenance and repair activities into the computerized maintenance management system (CMMS), including work orders, parts used, and PM records. Perform electrical repairs on 480V, 220V, and 110V AC/DC systems in an industrial environment. Troubleshoot and repair variable frequency drives (VFDs) and programmable logic controllers (PLCs). Diagnose, repair, and replace mechanical components such as bearings, cylinders, and other moving or structural parts. Perform MIG welding to support equipment repair, fabrication, and structural maintenance needs. Assist blade technicians with equipment setup, adjustments, and repairs involving cutting and processing equipment. Support the operations department by responding to equipment and production issues and restoring equipment to service promptly. Conduct mechanical troubleshooting on conveyors, packaging machines, and other production equipment to identify root causes of failures. Use power tools and hand tools safely and effectively to perform repairs and maintenance tasks. Perform maintenance and repair on packaging machines to ensure consistent, efficient operation. Apply knowledge of pneumatics and hydraulics to troubleshoot and repair related systems using hydraulic and pneumatic schematics. Interpret and work from blueprints, schematics, and other technical documentation to perform accurate repairs. Follow sanitation and safety practices appropriate for a food-industry environment while performing maintenance activities. Essential Skills At least 3+ years of industrial maintenance experience performing both mechanical and electrical repairs is a strong plus. Proficiency in mechanical troubleshooting on conveyors, packaging equipment, and other industrial machinery. Hands-on experience with maintenance and repair of electrical systems, including 480V, 220V, and 110V AC/DC circuits. Ability to troubleshoot and repair VFDs and PLC-controlled equipment. Strong skills in preventive maintenance, including planning and executing PM activities. Ability to read and interpret hydraulic and pneumatic schematics and perform related repairs. Experience working with pneumatics and hydraulics in an industrial setting. MIG welding skills suitable for equipment repair and basic fabrication. Competence in electrical troubleshooting using schematics and technical documentation. Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings. Experience working in maintenance roles within the food industry or similarly sanitized environments. Proficiency with basic computer applications, including Word and Excel, to support maintenance documentation. Ability to use maintenance software or CMMS to create work orders, record repairs, manage parts lists, and document PMs. Comfort working in a cold, wet, and sanitized production environment with strong cleaning agents. Additional Skills & Qualifications Military background in mechanical or electrical fields is a plus and translates well to this role. Experience with sanitation practices and maintenance work in food-processing or similar regulated environments. Familiarity with service and repair of conveyor systems and packaging lines. Strong troubleshooting mindset with the ability to diagnose issues using schematics and technical references. Attention to detail in documenting maintenance activities and following established procedures. Comfort working around cleaning agents such as chlorine and citric acid, with awareness of potential sensitivities or allergies. Ability to collaborate effectively with operations staff, blade technicians, and other maintenance team members. The work environment is consistently cold and wet, with temperatures typically between 34 and 40 degrees. Floors remain wet due to ongoing sanitation and washing of equipment and product, and there is a noticeable presence of chlorine and citric acid used for cleaning, which creates a strong, distinct odor throughout the facility. Maintenance work involves regular use of power tools, hand tools, and industrial equipment in close proximity to production lines and packaging machines. Team members should be comfortable working in cold conditions, around moisture, and in an environment where strict sanitation and food-safety standards apply, and they should be mindful of any sensitivities or allergies to cleaning agents such as chlorine.
