Level A Maintenance Technician Job Description This role focuses on performing comprehensive maintenance and repair work on garbage trucks that operate throughout the Central Kentucky area. You will handle tasks ranging from routine preventive maintenance, such as oil changes and tire rotations, to more complex mechanical and hydraulic repairs on the vehicles and their equipment. You will also help ensure that all trucks receive timely scheduled service to keep the fleet safe, reliable, and compliant. Responsibilities Perform routine preventive maintenance on garbage trucks, including oil changes, tire rotations, and brake service. Diagnose and repair mechanical issues on heavy diesel trucks and associated equipment. Inspect, service, and repair hydraulic systems and components used on garbage trucks. Complete work orders accurately, documenting all repairs, parts used, and labor performed. Schedule and perform preventive maintenance (PMs) for trucks to ensure regular service intervals are met. Conduct basic and intermediate electrical troubleshooting on truck systems and components. Use appropriate tools, equipment, and diagnostic devices to identify and resolve mechanical and hydraulic problems. Follow established maintenance procedures and safety guidelines while working in the shop and around vehicles. Maintain a clean and organized work area in accordance with 5S standards. Collaborate with other technicians and shop staff to prioritize work and ensure timely completion of repairs. Essential Skills 2-5 years of experience working with diesel or heavy equipment maintenance and repair. Strong mechanical skills, including experience with auto repair or similar mechanical work. Hands-on experience with heavy diesel systems and components. Ability to perform maintenance and repairs on hydraulic systems. Capability to perform basic to intermediate electrical troubleshooting on vehicles. Willingness to learn and work specifically with garbage trucks and their specialized equipment. Ability to follow maintenance schedules and complete preventive maintenance tasks. Competence in reading and completing work orders and maintenance documentation. Commitment to working safely and following established shop procedures. Additional Skills & Qualifications Technical college education in diesel technology or a related field (preferred). Diesel mechanic certification or similar credential (preferred). Experience working in a structured maintenance environment with 5S or similar organizational practices. Familiarity with heavy truck systems, including brakes, tires, and driveline components. Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical issues.
