The Opportunity

Contra Costa Water District is seeking a dedicated Maintenance Mechanic to join the Operations and Maintenance team. This role performs hands-on mechanical maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and installation work on pumps, motors, valves, generators, hydraulic and pneumatic systems, and other essential equipment that keeps the Contra Costa Water District's operations running safely and efficiently.

The Maintenance Mechanic position offers opportunities for additional pay through incentive programs. Employees who voluntarily obtain and maintain a valid Commercial Drivers License (CDL) may receive a 5% pay differential for a Class A CDL or a 2.5% pay differential for a Class B CDL. As a Maintenance Mechanic, you will contribute to the reliable delivery of high-quality water by helping maintain the facilities and systems that support daily operations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Inspect, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair pumps, motors, valves, and related mechanical equipment.
  • Perform preventive and corrective maintenance activities to ensure safe and reliable operation of water treatment and distribution systems.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, manuals, and technical specifications related to mechanical systems and equipment.
  • Work independently or collaboratively with maintenance crews to complete repairs, installations, and operational projects.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance records and utilize computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) to document work activities.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Must possess mobility to work in the plant and field; strength, stamina, and mobility to perform medium to heavy physical work; to sit, stand, and walk on level, uneven, or slippery surfaces; frequently reach, twist, turn, kneel, bend, stoop, squat, crouch, grasp, and make repetitive hand movement in the performance of daily duties; to climb and descend ladders, to operate varied hand and power tools and equipment, and to operate a motor vehicle and visit various District sites; and vision to read printed materials and a computer screen. The job involves fieldwork requiring frequent walking in operational areas to identify problems or hazards and working in confined spaces. Finger dexterity is needed to operate and maintain tools and equipment. Employees must possess the ability to carry, push, pull, and lift materials and objects weighing up to 50 pounds with the use of proper equipment.

ENVIRONMENTAL ELEMENTS
Employees work in the plant and field and are exposed to loud noise levels, cold and hot temperatures, inclement weather conditions, road hazards, vibration, chemicals, mechanical and/or electrical hazards, hazardous physical substances and fumes, dust, and air contaminants. Employees may be exposed to blood borne pathogens.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Employees are required to meet California Occupational Safety and Health Administration (CalOSHA) Respiratory Protection Program guidelines including passing a fit test and annual medical examinations and complying with on-demand shave policy.

WORKING CONDITIONS
Employees may be required to work outside their Normal Workweek/Workday which may consist of evenings, weekends, and holidays.
