POSITION SUMMARY
Under direct supervision, the Mechanic I-VI performs a range of intermediate to skilled work on all County Connection vehicles and equipment in support of journey-level mechanics. This position performs services, repairs, and adjustments to all components of vehicles including engines, transmissions, differential units, generators, and hydraulic and electrical systems.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES (Typical duties are listed below, and may include assisting with other various tasks and special projects as needed or assigned)
- Remove and replace air suspension systems, air systems, and radiators.
- Remove and replace fare boxes, door glass, bulbs, wiper blade, hoses, and belts.
- Repair destination signage and passenger signal cords.
- Realign and adjust brakes.
- Remove and mount wheels.
- Make road service calls as needed.
- Maintain written records of repairs and replacements.
The Mechanic classification is considered a safety sensitive position under the drug and Alcohol testing programs issued by the Federal Transit Administration (FTA). Therefore, the employee is subject to substance abuse testing.
REQUIREMENTS
- Education equivalent to a high school diploma or general education degree (GED).
- Completion of diesel mechanic training and minimum one (1) to six (6) years of experience.
- Related experience or training that demonstrates substantial knowledge and abilities pertinent to specific job functions may qualify for substitution of the training/education requirement.
- Must be able to obtain a Class B Commercial drivers license, including the required endorsements and the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) Medical Examiners Certificate.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain the required tools, including a rollaway toolbox, to perform all duties.
SKILLS & ABILITIES
- Knowledge of methods, materials, tools, equipment, and standard practices used to maintain a fleet of vehicles in a safe manner.
- Knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions followed in heavy equipment repair shops.
- Ability to safely operate motor vehicles, an assortment of hand and power tools and other work-related equipment.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Ability to complete forms and write routine reports in a legible, accurate and complete manner.
- Must occasionally lift and/or move items such as tools or vehicle parts that weigh up to fifty (50) pounds, either manually or with a dolly or forklift.
