The Transportation Worker 1 Mechanic in this position reports to the Equipment Division in Upshur County. The selected applicant, under general supervision, performs entry-level repairs and preventative maintenance on transportation vehicles and all types of highway equipment in need of repair. Will perform minor maintenance on fleet equipment and vehicles, which includes, but is not limited to, changing or repairing tires, checking automotive fluids, checking/installing windshield wipers, and inspecting vehicles for compliance with state regulations. Helps to provide a safe work environment by keeping the garage area clean. Assists the higher-level mechanics with vehicle and heavy equipment repairs. This position also operates a Steam Jenny on a daily basis to wash and detail equipment and vehicles brought in for repair. May be exposed to hazardous working conditions and inclement weather. Performs other related duties as required.

  • The selected applicant will be placed in a U.S. Department of Labor apprenticeship program. The selected applicant will be required, within 6 months of employment, to obtain a commercial driver's license (CDL). Progress through the apprenticeship program, as well as the opportunity for advancement to a higher classification, is dependent upon hours completed, proficiency in work, training completed, as well as obtaining and maintaining a Commercial Drivers License (CDL).

  • The WVDOT is responsible for the planning, construction, maintenance, and regulation of over 35,000 miles of state roads. This duty may necessitate employees working irregular hours, shifts, weekends, and more than 40 hours per week, occasionally without prior notice.
    In the area of assignment of Equipment Operator and Mechanic, a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) will be required within six (6) months of employment.

  • Pay Grade 10H
    Tier 1 hourly rate: $15.4913

  • Perform minor maintenance on fleet equipment and vehicles.
  • Clean garage areas.
  • Changes and repairs tires.
  • Check and change automotive fluids.
  • Install windshield wipers.
  • Inspect vehicles for compliance with state regulations.
  • May work with components on diesel-powered equipment.
  • Assists higher-level mechanics in heavy equipment repairs.
  • Travel may be required; therefore, a valid drivers license is required.
  • A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) will be required within six (6) months of employment.

Knowledge of general safety procedures.
Knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of vehicles and other motor-driven equipment.
Knowledge of the operation of motor-driven equipment.
Skill in the use of tools and equipment used in the repair of motor-driven equipment. Ability to diagnose minor mechanical problems and determine appropriate procedures for repair.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to learn from example and work cooperatively with others.
Ability to maintain routine records (timecards, repair work orders).

REQUIRED TRAINING/EDUCATION
No formal education required.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE
This is the entry-level classification in this series. No prior experience is required.
