Positions assigned to this class perform a wide variety of advanced maintenance, construction and repair work for the Public Works Streets division. The following are intended to describe core work functions of this classification. While the level and broad nature of essentials duties may not change, specific work tasks may vary over time depending on the City's needs.
Must possess a high school diploma or GED, and two (2) years paid fulltime experience in street maintenance and repair or construction work; OR one (1) year paid fulltime experience as described above and one (1) year as a Public Works Maintenance Worker. Must possess a valid Arizona Commercial Drivers License (CDL) with Tanker endorsement. Knowledge

Candidates who are selected for appointment may be required to be fingerprinted, if 18 or older; successfully complete a background investigation, employment verification and may be subject to a drug/alcohol test, medical, polygraph and/or psychological evaluation. Candidates who are appointed will be required to possess a valid drivers license to operate a vehicle in Arizona or meet the transportation needs of the position.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
Work is performed outdoors and includes walking and operation of a vehicle and construction related equipment. Requires moderate exertion and lifting carrying objects between 20 and 100 pounds, repeated bending, stooping and reaching above the head daily. Performs construction and maintenance functions requiring visual and manual dexterity and precision measurements and continuous repetitive arm, hand and eye movement. May be exposed to high voltage and hazardous chemicals. May be required to work overtime or extended hours during emergency situations.

- Shovel and spread asphalt and asphalt base or other street surface materials used in patching, repairing and reconstructing streets; read and interprets basic maps and blueprints.
- Paints and stripes City streets and curbs.
- Installs City signposts, signs and pavement markers.
- Clean up debris from parking lots, walkways, ditches, alleys, streets and storm drains; manage plant growth in and near roadways and medians; inspect and clear obstructions from roadways and storm drains; perform work in emergency situations as required.
- Use concrete cutting and breaking equipment; pour and assist in finishing concrete and masonry work; construct concrete forms and perform rough carpentry work.
- Place street barricades and cones prior to the performance of street repair activities; direct and controls traffic around work sites; utilize proper safety precautions related to all work performed; create and maintain a safe work environment; alert others to any dangerous situations.
- Operate front end loader, Gannon tractor, roller, street sweeper, and other vehicles/equipment as assigned.
- Act as lead when the job lead or crew leaders are not present at the job site, responsible for the completion of work.
- Serves as mentor for Public Works Maintenance Workers and trainees.
- Support the Citys policies, goals and objectives and work with management and other staff to ethically achieve such goals and objectives; ensure compliance with safety procedures.

- Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) laws, regulations and standards, National Incident Management System (NIMS) procedures, National Electric Code (NEC) standards and Environmental Protection Agency regulations.
- Performing general tasks in various trades such as carpentry, masonry and construction.
- Injury prevention, safety standards and proper procedure to follow after an employee injury or accident.
Skills
- Identifying proper equipment needs for each project.
- Operating various types of construction tools and equipment including but not limited to dump truck, sweeper,
- roller, jack hammer and striping truck.
- Using proper safety gear and precautions when handling equipment.
- Reading and interpreting basic maps, blueprints and blue staking markers/indicators.
- Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with contractors, coworkers and other individuals in contact during the course of work; communicating clearly and concisely; following instructions
