The Alumni Association of the University of Michigan is seeking a Maintenance Mechanic III for Camp Michigania. The Maintenance Mechanic III is responsible for the inspection, maintenance, repair, and replacement of a wide range of mechanical, plumbing, electrical, structural, and specialized facility systems. This position supports the safe, efficient, and reliable operation of approximately 50 buildings across 400 acres , including facilities located along 1,000 feet of shoreline on the beautiful and pristine Walloon Lake in Boyne City, Michigan .

  • Repair or replace pumps, compressors and motors.
  • Provide in-service training to other employees on building and equipment inspection, maintenance and repair.
  • Replace water, sewer, air and gas lines.
  • Maintain, repair and replace specialized equipment and facilities systems, including building management system controls such as large commercial food service equipment and emergency generators.
  • Dismantle mechanical equipment using hoists, scaffolding and chainfalls.
  • Prepare sketches and specifications for structural components and building fixtures.
  • Adjust, repair and replace sheaves, bearings, belts and guards on large air handling and exhaust systems.
  • Repair ducts, machine guards, tanks and fan or filter housings.
  • Inspect and test steam and hot water systems, fire and sprinkler systems, compressors, and air and exhaust systems to assure correct operation, cycling and functioning of gauges, valves and controllers to determine maintenance needs.
  • Inspect and repair water, sewer, air and gas lines.
  • Repair sheet metal structures, such as ducts, roof gutters, flashing, tanks, blowers, drain pipes and filter housings.
  • Repair and replace electrical outlets, switches and light fixtures.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, diagrams, sketches and job specifications to locate machinery, ducts, piping and valves, and to apply manufacturer's instructions for maintenance and repair procedures.
  • Braze, solder and weld pipe, sheet metal and metal fixtures and furniture.
  • Repair and replace sinks, commodes and urinals, including faucets and valve assemblies.

General Responsibilities:

Supervision Received

Direct supervision is received from the Facilities Manager

  • A high school diploma is required.
  • Knowledge and experience in maintenance that can include building construction, motor maintenance and repair, and electrical and plumbing installation.
  • Ability to work in a team.
  • Ability to positively interact with a broad spectrum of ages and personalities on a daily basis.
  • A valid driver's license is required to drive a U-M and AAUM vehicle.
  • Ability to move a minimum of 50 pounds and to do labor intensive physical work.
  • Experience with small engine repair
  • Occasional evening and weekend work is required to support year round camp programs, including 11-week summer camp.
