Assistant Mechanic

Job Summary

This is an excellent opportunity for someone who wants to gain experience at a high-end golf facility and join a staff that has several years of experience in the industry. The position as an Assistant golf course superintendent will be helping with all daily operations, crew scheduling, participate in spray/fertility applications, as well helping lead a crew of 25+ employees. You will work in constant communication with the Head Mechanic as well as Golf Course Superintendent.

Responsibilities and expectations will include the following:

  • Assist in establishing and enforcing operating procedures and work standards that will ensure adequate performance and personnel safety.
  • Preventative maintenance and repair of all golf course and grounds equipment.
  • Inspect, diagnose, and repair mechanical defects in diesel, electric and gasoline powered utility vehicles, mowers, all small and heavy equipment.
  • Perform regular maintenance checks such oil changes, tire rotations, and fluid checks.
  • Repairs carburetors, distributors, fuel pumps, brakes, steering systems, starters, generators, universal joints, hydraulic systems, transmission systems, electrical systems, and high-pressure pumps and valve.
  • Ability to work proactively relative to equipment maintenance and repairs to minimize equipment downtime and loss of staff productivity.
  • Adjust mowers and cutting units correctly according to accurate standard operating procedures.
  • Welding, engine rebuilding, ability to read hydraulic and wiring schematics.
  • Use diagnostic tools and specialized equipment to identify problems and troubleshoot solutions.
  • Ensure that all work is completed in compliance with safety regulations and manufacturer guidelines.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Able to interact successfully with a variety of people in person with attention to comprehending information. Excellent oral communication skills as well as understanding written communication in work related documents. Time management and independent thinking skills are a must. Must be confident of skills and have the ability to make sound, independent decisions when appropriate; have the willingness to adjust to and conform to varying schedules; have excellent communication skills; and be able to get along well with others. Minimum three years turfgrass equipment maintenance experience. Willingness to work early mornings, weekends, and holidays as needed.

Education & Experience:

High school diploma or GED certificate or equivalent. Some previous work-related skill, knowledge, or experience required. Four-year bachelor's degree preferred. Possession of a valid driver's license. 2-3 years experience in the maintenance industry preferred. Vocational training, trade school, or mechanical apprenticeship experience is a plus.

Work Environment & Physical Demands:

Must be able to stand for extended periods of time while working on the grounds, have good communication skills (i.e., communicate clearly and effectively in both written and spoken English). Must be able to lift and move materials weighing up to 110 pounds - maintaining grounds require bending, climbing, stooping, carrying and/or lifting materials. Performing movements which require considerable movement of arms, legs and moving entire body as well as maneuvering and navigating vehicles and mechanized equipment. Must be able to work outdoors exposed to all weather conditions. May come in contact with various insecticides, fumes, fertilizers, exhaust and other pollutants. Must be able to see and work with other employees and work in open area.
