What We Are Looking For

The Instrumentation & Controls (I&C) Technician is responsible for the safe operation, maintenance, calibration, and optimization of facility instrumentation, automation, and control systems. This role ensures reliable facility operations by maintaining control, measurement, safety, and analytical systems in compliance with regulatory and company standards. The technician works closely with engineers, operators, and contractors, while participating in on-call rotations and supporting emergency response activities.

What You Will Do

Instrumentation, Controls, and Automation

  • Maintain, calibrate, test, troubleshoot, repair, and monitor instrumentation and control systems (PLCs, DCS, SCADA, analytical systems).
  • Maintain performance of temperature, pressure, flow, and level devices, valves, hydraulic control panels, and controllers.
  • Operate and maintain process control, safety shutdown, fire detection, and gas detection systems.
  • Troubleshoot using P&IDs, loop diagrams, and control documentation.
  • Optimize SCADA communication systems and PLC performance.

Electrical & I&E Maintenance

  • Perform I&E maintenance in compliance with regulatory and company standards.
  • Maintain electrical switchgear, power distribution, and facility grounding systems.
  • Complete inspections, preventive maintenance, and corrective maintenance tasks.
  • Accurately document maintenance activities and service records.

Engineering, Projects, and Continuous Improvement

  • Collaborate with engineers to optimize control systems and ensure compliance.
  • Participate in project planning, including P&IDs, Cause & Effect diagrams, and control system design.
  • Maintain and update technical documentation (loop diagrams, panel drawings, control narratives).
  • Assist with maintenance procedures, budgeting, and continuous improvement efforts.

Safety, Compliance, and Quality

  • Ensure safe operations and compliance with all regulatory requirements and company policies.
  • Participate in safety training, audits, and daily safety meetings.
  • Report unsafe conditions and evaluate contractor safety performance.
  • Maintain required Operator Qualifications (OQ).

Contractors, Inventory, and Administration

  • Oversee contractor work to ensure safety, quality, and productivity.
  • Manage spare parts and critical inventory.
  • Maintain contractor lists and review purchasing/invoices for improvements.
  • Utilize Microsoft Office tools for reporting and documentation.

Teamwork and Work Environment

  • Work independently or collaboratively as a team member or leader.
  • Mentor team members and communicate effectively with all levels of the organization.
  • Participate in on-call rotation and respond to emergency callouts.
  • Perform physical tasks, maintain clean work areas, and operate tools and vehicles.

What You Need

Minimum Requirements

Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent

Experience & Knowledge

  • General knowledge of 4-20 mA control systems and transmitters
  • Basic understanding of control networks and automation systems
  • Ability to complete required Operator Qualification (OQ) training

Skills & Abilities

  • Valid driver's license (meeting company requirements)
  • Electrical/mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills
  • Basic computer proficiency (Word, Excel, email)
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills
  • Ability to read and interpret technical documents
  • Problem-solving skills and ability to work independently
  • Ability to perform basic math calculations
  • Must pass background check, training, and drug screening
  • Willingness to be on-call and carry a company-issued phone

Physical & Work Requirements

  • Ability to lift 40-50 lbs regularly (up to 100 lbs occasionally)
  • Ability to climb, work at heights, and operate tools/equipment
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Willingness to work overtime, weekends, and holidays as needed

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in a technical field (or equivalent experience)
  • Experience in petroleum, natural gas, chemical, or power industries
  • Experience with instrumentation, control systems, SCADA, PLC, or DCS
  • Knowledge of process control theory and automation systems
  • Familiarity with handling flammable or high-pressure systems
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications
  • 3+ years of experience reading technical diagrams and troubleshooting control systems
