Under limited supervision, performs skilled mechanical work in the routine maintenance and repair of vehicles owned by the Solid Waste Department and the Countys General Fund fleet. Employee is responsible for routine servicing of both diesel and gasoline engines. Must be available to advise and diagnosis County departments on maintenance/repair issue with General Fund fleet. Reports to the Solid Waste and Recycling Director.

Performs preventative maintenance on vehicles and roll-off trucks.
Diagnosis and recommend to outside vendors service work that needs to be done to the County fleet. Answer and return phone calls to various garages located throughout the County, including site visits, all repair work must be approved by this position.
Answer and return calls to County employees. Diagnosis and repair flat tires, dead batteries, keys locked in vehicles, check engine lights, etc.
Adjusts and makes repairs to diesel and gasoline engines, adjusts or repairs valves, carburetors, generators and related units; replaces all worn or defective parts
Performs major and minor mechanical repairs and adjustments on power drive, brakes, steering mechanisms, and electrical, cooling and related systems on roll-off trucks.
Performs light welding and machine work incidental to completion of repair assignments.
Paints vehicles/equipment with spray gun as needed.
Performs housekeeping duties to ensure clean and organized shop.
ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Performs other related work as assigned.Graduation from high school supplemented by formal training in mechanical or related trades, and 4 years of experience as a mechanic including experience in the maintenance of diesel and gasoline powered engines; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Possession of a valid North Carolina commercial drivers license or able to obtain a North Carolina commercial drivers license within 90 days of employment.
