About The Position

The General Maintenance Technician II plays a critical role in maintaining the functionality, safety, and appearance of facilities across the campus. In addition to performing a wide range of general maintenance tasks, such as repairs, routine inspections, and preventative maintenance, this more senior-level position takes on added responsibilities, including leading small projects, mentoring junior technicians, and providing technical guidance in more complex troubleshooting and repair efforts.

Working closely with the Manager of General Maintenance and the broader Facilities team, the Technician II serves as a key contributor to the smooth operation of building systems, infrastructure, and equipment across both indoor and outdoor spaces. The role includes a deeper focus on diagnosing system failures, coordinating with vendors and contractors, and supporting compliance with safety and regulatory standards through preparation for internal and external inspections.

This role requires advanced mechanical aptitude, sound judgment, and a proactive approach to solving problems independently and in collaboration with others. The Technician II helps ensure that maintenance activities align with organizational standards and support the broader mission of the campus. Participation in an on-call rotation is required, as is the ability to respond promptly to urgent situations when needed.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform daily maintenance tasks to support facility operations, including repairs, fabrication work, special gallery installations, office remodels, and general equipment maintenance.
  • Conduct routine upkeep of windows and specialized operating equipment used for facility maintenance.
  • Support the facilities team with scheduled maintenance activities, special projects, and installation tasks.
  • Respond to maintenance requests submitted through the centralized maintenance management system in a timely and efficient manner.
  • May perform duties as on call technician to monitor the Building Management System (BMS) and tend to facility emergencies.
  • Perform troubleshooting and repairing various building systems and components.
  • Participate in project planning and ensure proper cleanup and restoration upon completion.
  • Help prepare for both internal and third-party inspections, ensuring areas meet required standards.
  • Maintain campus ponds, water features, and all related equipment to ensure proper operation and appearance.
  • Escort external contractors while they perform work on or around the campus to ensure compliance with site protocols.
  • Perform a variety of general maintenance tasks, including carpentry, painting, plumbing, installation, and repairs.
  • Participate in cross-training within the Facilities department to provide support across various functions as needed.
  • Assist in Drone maintenance as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • 3-5 years of experience working in building operations or other related fields such as construction or maintenance.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude with effective troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities.
  • Extended knowledge of building systems and components.
  • Understanding of measurements and mathematical applications.
  • Skilled in using a variety of hand and power tools.
  • Knowledge of standard practices and tools used in the maintenance and repair of building facilities.
  • Capable of operating standard equipment and machinery, including forklifts, scissor/extension lifts, and vehicles/carts/trailers.
  • Willingness and ability to learn and use specialized software.
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and other basic computer applications.

Physical Demands : In the work environment described, this role requires a high level of physical activity and sustained use of a computer and telephone for prolonged periods of time. The position requires effective verbal and written communication with others, good eye/hand coordination, and the ability to lift and transport up to 75 pounds. Vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. This role regularly involves standing, walking, using hands and fingers to handle or operate tools, controls, and equipment, reaching with hands and arms, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and communicating clearly with others. The position requires operation of standard maintenance equipment such as hand tools, power tools, ladders, forklifts, and aerial lifts (e.g., scissor or boom lifts). Duties include performing routine inspections, which may involve navigating tight or elevated spaces, exposure to hot and cold equipment, and occasionally working at heights. The ability to respond promptly and physically to urgent situations, including during off-hours as part of the on-call rotation, is essential.

Work Environment : Work is performed in both indoor office settings and outdoor environments, including exposure to varying weather conditions, mechanical rooms, rooftops, and other facility systems areas. The noise level is low to moderate, however, operating certain equipment may result in higher noise levels. Occasional exposure to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock. The employee is required to wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) in accordance with safety protocols. This position may involve working in confined spaces or environments with temperature fluctuations depending on the season or building system conditions. Flexibility in working hours, including weekends and evenings, may be necessary to support operational needs.
