TASKS OR DUTIES (Illustrative)
Performs daily inspections and maintenance of utility plants in surrounding areas to assure proper operation and clean and orderly conditions;
Repairs and patches streets, sidewalks and curbs, operates air hammer and other equipment; Rebuilds streets, inlets and catch basins;
Repairs leaking water mains and defective sewer tiles; Makes water taps and installs water meters;
Installs and replaces street and traffic signs; Straightens and replaces parking meter posts; Installs and paints barricades;
Trims, sprays and prunes trees and paints trees wounds;
Cuts brush and operates chipping machine as an incidental task; Services trucks and other equipment;
Operates compressor;
May operate other motorized equipment; Plows snow;
Repairs minor maintenance and custodial work in the care of departmental facilities; Serves as a helper to a maintenance tradesman or plant operator;
Maintains utility plants and surrounding areas or sidewalks in a clean and orderly condition;
Performs general laboring tasks such as repairing sewers, cindering and patching streets, and assisting in emergencies such as floods and storms;
Drives dump truck and other motor equipment;
Performs fill-in as Operator I on rotating shifts as required; Performs related duties as required.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
Some knowledge of the methods and materials used in street maintenance and repair work;
Some knowledge of the method, equipment and materials used in maintaining, repairing and operating water and sewer systems;
Ability to maintain daily reporting forms and work orders for reporting work completed on a given day; Good knowledge of the precautions necessary in performing maintenance, construction, and repair work; Skill in the use and care of tools and equipment used in general maintenance, construction and repair work;
Ability to take adequate measurements to record completed underground work, (i.e. location of curb boxes, valves and water and sewer pipes);
Physical strength and agility sufficient to do strenuous laboring tasks under varying weather conditions;
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, City officials and the public;
The ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions and sketches; Good judgment, thoroughness and dependability;
Some experience in public works and construction and maintenance work; High School diploma or GED equivalent;
Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and/or ability.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Possession of a valid State of Illinois motor vehicle operator's license appropriate to operate equipment (CDL - Commercial Driver's License).
Must reside within the City of Joliet and/or reside within the City of Joliet within eighteen (18) months from the date of hire if the date of hire is after February 16, 2016.

Requires you to live within the City of Joliet. If you are hired for the position and do not currently live in Joliet, you have 18 months to move.
Salary starts at $53,154. This is not a negotiable starting salary. Step Increases are as follows:
oAfter 18 months: $76,797.00 o After 24 months: $82,655.00 o After 30 months: $85,123.00 o After 48 months: $91,203.00 o After 144 months: $95,641.00 o After 180 months: $98,454.00 o After 240 months: $103,189.00
*Future salary amounts may change depending on yearly cost of living (January 1st) and new collective bargaining contracts
